vancian casting, what solution is acceptable to you?

I think that in 5e, Vancian magic should be one option you can choose to plug in, or not. One option amongst several (like a skill-based magic system instead, for example).

Designing a City for Supers - is my sandbox big enough?

I haven't played video games since the early days of Atari (Space Invaders and Asteroids - LOL!) but I'm going to check if my nephew has those games and take a look. Thanks for the suggestion!

WotC Seeks Unity with a New Edition

Good, glad to hear it, because that's what they should be doing.

WotC Seeks Unity with a New Edition

I think 4e D&D Essentials did an okay job and Paizo's Pathfinder Beginner Box was a little better for entry level fantasy roleplaying game products in a box. Unfortunately for both companies, it isn't 1980 anymore. If either of them want to get younger people invested in the game, not only do...

    A subforum for 5e?

New Horizons sounds more like a 12 Step Recovery Program at a Rehab Center... :uhoh: ...which might not be entirely inappropriate. B-) Also, I want to give a huge shout out to Morrus - despite the "big D&D news" today, EN World has been running like a charm with very little lag or delay. When...

WotC Seeks Unity with a New Edition

I don't think "unite all players" with 5e is an obtainable or realistic goal. I do, however, think it's awesome that it is a stated goal for 5e, because even if they fall short of that mark, I'm sure some good design and development will come out of it anyway. More so when you combine that with...

Designing a City for Supers - is my sandbox big enough?

For those interested, I'm developing Grimm City as a campaign setting on my blog now, Just Add Heroes. Tonight I posted a writeup about the early history of Grimm City: Just Add Heroes: Grimm City History: Early History and The Troubled Time Thanks for reading, and now back to making the maps! B-)

Designing a City for Supers - is my sandbox big enough?

I'm using Campaign Cartographer 3 (CC3), specifically the Modern Road Map templates from the 2011 Cartographer's Annual Volume 5 for CC3.

Do "old school" RPGers have an advantage?

The more you do something, the easier it becomes and the better you get. But just because you are experienced and really good at something doesn't automatically mean you will be any good *teaching* it. Teaching and Doing are often two different things.

Kickstarter-Style Preorders: The Future of RPGs?

Thanks, S'mon. So then it is possible to get ripped off on a Kickstarter project. And is anyone really going to go to court over $50 bucks or more likely much less? That said, I see that scenario as highly unlikely in the RPG community, given how relatively small we are. There was only one...

Kickstarter-Style Preorders: The Future of RPGs?

Wow - that sounded awfully passive aggressive confrontational and I really didn't mean it to be... :uhoh: B-)

Kickstarter-Style Preorders: The Future of RPGs?

I have yet to participate in a Kickstarter project, but I have my eye on an upcoming one. I did participate in a couple of "patronage" style products for ICONS - Hero Pack 1 and Hero Pack 2 that line artist Dan Houser put together and really enjoyed the experience. I do have one question I can...

why would a SuperHero campaign need a sandbox?

    5. A mysterious benefactor, patron or other figure that usually remains in the anonymous or in the shadows (e.g. Oracle/Barbara Gordon from Birds of Prey, Orwell from The Cape)

Designing a City for Supers - is my sandbox big enough?

In what sense? Exactly. That's what I want for certain areas along the eastern coast and along the river, with more "urban planning" towards the west and more "inland". Here's today's effort adding in the major neighborhoods/districts. Tomorrow I plan on working on Lake Triton's northern...

Mountain Dew may also be of use in-game...

I think the only thing that could possibly top this is if somebody sued Philip Morris Marlboro for finding a LIVE rat in a carton of cigarettes and Philip Morris claiming that it was impossible for a live rat to be inside the carton because their product would have caused the rat to get lung...

why would a SuperHero campaign need a sandbox?

Yes - and the newsfeed definitely plays an integral role in most supers comics. Brainstorming some example newsfeeds: 1. The hero has a secret identity as a reporter, cop or other law enforcement, or as a first responder and has instant access to info. 2. The hero has a love interest...

why would a SuperHero campaign need a sandbox?

While thinking about the "patrol" motif seen with early Batman and Daredevil, it dawned on me that one of my favorite group of comic heroes, the Fantastic Four, are at the opposite end of the spectrum where trouble just seems to land literally at their doorstep.

why would a SuperHero campaign need a sandbox?

That's how I feel about maps (and even blueprints) from fictional works too. For me, it was anything Star Trek that I could get my hands on and take and use in my Star Trek roleplaying games. And I think maps help not only the GM but the players as well - they can visualize where they are, where...
