It seems to go in streaks. I can kill the Balrog ten times in a row, then suddenly get killed in one hit a half-dozen times. Just fight something weaker for a few hours, and see if you have more luck then. I don't think the pseudo-random number generator is all that good. :(

Anyway, there's a quick way of you gaining major Strength. Give away your Balor's Might and Sapphire. Then buy three Giant's Strength. That should be a cheap way to gain some Strength. You'll lose 100 DEF and 50 MP, but you'll gain 150 STR. Then you can save up for the last three...
