Why I think you should try 4e (renamed)

First off, I don't appreciate the snarkiness of your post. Second, I don't have trust issues with my DM; I just certain expectations and ideas of how a D&D game should be run. This might be different than yours, and that's fine, but don't try to play me off as some brat who whines when he...

Why I think you should try 4e (renamed)

For me, unless the battle is truly epic (end bosses, etc) 10 rounds or longer is too long. In any edition. As for prestige class requirements, "only if you're a local from this area can enter" is great, IMO. Now if a PC is made from that area and meets the requirements, than great!

Why I think you should try 4e (renamed)

This. And this. As well as this. I see nothing wrong with adding such a prestige class/feat/template. Doing so might just offer more to the adventure, or future adventures.

Why I think you should try 4e (renamed)

The 21 AC was the example. If you want a better example, let's say the 10th level pirate has an AC of 31. Or 41. My intention was not to exaggerate a problem so much as to point out something I find irksome and in poor taste. The fact that you get a boast to AC as you level is actually one of...

Why I think you should try 4e (renamed)

As I have explained, "Because I said so" isn't the same as creating a prestige class/template/whatever. Any of those things exist in the game world, for good or ill, to be used by or against the players. "Because I said so" is nothing more than a smoke screen for the DM to *possibly be a...

Why I think you should try 4e (renamed)

The only difference is that if a Dread Pirate prestige class was created, it would *possibly* have an impact outside of that lone encounter. Was the pirate the only such example of the prestige class? Perhaps there is an entire organization of them. And what if one the PC's wants to become one...

Why I think you should try 4e (renamed)

Actually, I'm not. Making up something new (prestige class, template) is working within the bounds of the rules. It also provides possible plot hooks/ideas/etc. Handwaving something because you want it to be that way despite the rules not supporting it is a whole new animal, and one I...

Why I think you should try 4e (renamed)

Agreed, for the most part. I notice that when the rules tend to be disregarded for the sake of facilitating play, it happens from behind the screen. Players rarely get to play bare-chested pirates with high AC's by virtue of interesting concept. If a PC runs around with no armor on in D&D, he...

Why I think you should try 4e (renamed)

True, however the big difference is that with the bare-chested pirate, there is no explanation other than "I wanted it that way." If a human pirate isn't wearing armor or using magic, and doesn't have some fancy prestige class, then I would call foul. However, I have no problem with DM Fiat if...

Why I think you should try 4e (renamed)

I have a problem with this. I may be in the minority, but just deciding "I want the pirate to have an AC of 21" and not backing it up feels like cheating. I've DM'd my fair share of games, and I know firsthand the headache it can cause, especially in situations like the pirate, but I don't like...

    Optimize a Party of Werebears!

An update, for those who are interested. We had our first session last night. The Witchwood, where all the action is taking place, is being overrun by the Red Hand; goblinoids and their giant allies are rampaging across the forest, looting and burning every settlement they come across. Our...

    Playing Apparent Losers

One of the most memorable characters I've played was a human fighter named Joe Shmoe. Joe was the human average; every one of his stats was a 10. The dice were not with me when I rolled him up, but I went with it anyway. Joe was a challenge to play; his low stats disqualified him from many of...

    Okay, 'fess up

I'm guilty of this. I have recreated at least a dozen of my favorite 2E characters. Granted, some of them don't really work as well in the current editions as they did in 2E, but meh. :p

Heh heh, they do look like morons. But I love Thog.

Eadric et. al. (The Paladin and his Friends).

Yikes! The Good guys have their work cut out for them. I am curious about one thing: does Shuth have any "good" divine entities? Or are they largely polarized as "evil" as a way of contrasting them to Oronthon?

DMs not playing by the rules (Forked Thread: What are the no-goes for you?)

I hope you offered the players the same option of rolling for defense, because I have to tell you, nothing irks me more than when a DM decides to make things "dynamic" for the npc's and monsters, but not the PC's.

    Optimize a Party of Werebears!

All the wildling clasp would do is allow to item to stay unmelded, it would allow the item to grow. So basically normal sized armor would burst. Heh, the clasp was the first thing I thought of.

What was your irratating DmPC's backstory?

Before I start, I should say that my DM had the excuse of being young and relatively inexperienced compared to his current self (we have been gaming together since we were 13). He has the good grace to acknowledge the cheese he pulled :p. Okay, back in our glorious high school days, our DM was...

    Optimize a Party of Werebears!

That would be a handy item to have! 20% miss chance would be a big help to big lumbering man-bears. I wish we had enough money to start out with that item; I'm gonna save up for that.
