    Detect Magic is Dead

I don't see what's wrong with the old way. See if potions stack and then just identify one of them; try to engrave on the floor with wands; if you have multiple rings of the same type, drop one down the sink. Or you can just try to sell your items to the local shopkeeper. Multiply his asking...

    Excerpt: the quest's the thing

Most DMs railroad a little (prepares more for certain events than others, encourage players to do the adventure the DM planned). However, the current D&D political climate is such that "railroading" is a dirty word. Extreme railroading is bad. But "All railroading is bad" is an extreme, and one...

Zing! Because while 3e tried to make every encounter balanced, and provided extensive guidelines to do so, we all know that the guidelines were utter failures! So even though the DM tried to provide a CR-appropriate challenge, the Duke still outmatched the PCs! Way to stick it to 3e, Pawsplay!

I don't trust Brown Jenkin or pawsplay when it comes to the fighting prowess of cats. Cats always inflate their kill rate.

OK, Andor. The D&D game you are playing, where the warlord has figured out his hit point value via darts and can announce it to the world, doesn't match my "pretend the stuff offstage follows logical laws" game. But your position is internally consistent, I think we each understand the opposing...

Rex's 4e fixes, addendum: STALE CORN MUFFINS AND CATS DO NO DAMAGE

That's a good question. The money value is easy to fix. For the magic items, my kludge would be to add or subtract a level-plus-2 item for groups of 6 or 4.

Meanwhile, in another thread, Schroedinger's Orc (is he a minion or not? we'll find out when we stb him) is not acceptable.

    Minion Fist Fights

I still don't understand how anyone's suspension of disbelief could be broken by minions but not by hit points. HIT POINTS. There's no way I can kill this unarmed wizard by stabbing him with this sword. He has 40 HP, and my max damage is 20 HP! This is not a realistic system, nor one that...

    Minion Fist Fights

Andor, your argument against minions is that you could, inexplicably, set up a single, giant, set-piece opponent who you decided to make a MINION. Correct?

Turns out Hit Points don't adequately describe reality or literature! WHO KNEW????

Neither do I, normally. But sometimes I'm like, "Can I skip to the next post that is NOT about the Duke's resistance to Intimidate?" :)

I wish that people could specifically reply to a certain post, like on Slashdot, and their replies would appear under that post. Then I could just stay away from the "20% resale value" ghetto and read the interesting posts. My first eye-opener in the article was the fact that all found treasure...

Minions are alien visitors from another kind of game

I'll grant you that a 1st edition housecat could kill any number of 4e minions. In an early Dragon magazine, there was a story about a cat who stalked and killed a party of 6 0-level carpenters armed with hammers. I've always disliked things that do small amounts of HP damage, but that seem...

Hit points are SUCH AN UNREALISTIC SYSTEM. They don't even have internal consistency. If hit points don't break your suspension of disbelief, then you have turned your suspension of disbelief off. Minions are pretty unrealistic too. This shouldn't break the game.

    Knocked prone

A saving throw or an attack on the reflex defense? 3e suggested giving a Reflex saving throw for falling off cliffs, I believe. Changing it to a coin flip is surprising.

Minions are alien visitors from another kind of game

True, but tactics never sound very exciting when stripped down to the essentials. "We'll just always focus fire on the strongest living opponent." "We'll just run up to everyone and do full attacks." "I'll cast all my save or dies on the BBEG until he dies." Sure, none of this sounds very...
