    Solo Adventures?

Maybe start a level 1 fighter against some goblin minions and stuff, and have a NPC cleric show up in time to help against some undead. Then you could fight the wizard Bargle! Not being snarky. I'd love to see the red box solo adventure adapted for 4e.

    Why rename HP & Saves?

This actually seems like a pretty good mechanic. I would try out this RPG.

The Dance of the Staff Blogs (w Collins, Cordell, Schaefer, Tweet, Bonner, Mearls)

That half orc sounds like a bard, who, it sounds like, provides healing through music.

The Dance of the Staff Blogs (w Collins, Cordell, Schaefer, Tweet, Bonner, Mearls)

That's funny. I was just looking for the old staff blogs. I had remembered something I read on a staff blog a long time ago: it was a post that was like "It's hard to reveal anything because everything is all of a piece. For instance, if I show the first line of Mount, it will reveal a core...

    Why rename HP & Saves?

wait... it... sounds like you and I are in agreement, storm-bringer! :o You say there has always been a "physical part" to wounds. I say "nicks and scratches." Gary says a sword thrust "grazes" someone. (I'll admit, I'm not crazy about stuff like Cleave, that does damage without a hit roll...

OMG 4e is Pokemon! ;) (please let Hitmonchan be in the MM)

    Excerpt: Racial Benefits

I like the fact that Group Insight is a half-elf racial feat, not a half-elf racial power. That way I can not take it. Generally, separating the peripheral racial abilities into optional modules like this is a good design, I think. If you don't want to be a dwarf with an axe or hammer, you can...

D&D 4E Additional first level 4E characters - alternative race/class combos from pregens

I feel like there will be new grist for this thread in about an hour... :)

    D&D 4E 4e last night... (A few pre-4e experiences)

I want to know more about the NPCs based on ENWorld posters. Unless it will result in hurt feelings, of course ;-)

    D&D 4E 4e Campaign Idea w/ Core Fluff - The Sundered Isles

Wow, who knew that the combat chapter of the 3e PHB was such a fecund source of campaign ideas that 3 people independently had sundered isles? I propose some new areas to this world: -A series of islands near Nerath, enslaved by the humans, and not allowed weapons. Name: The Disarmed Isles -A...

    Why rename HP & Saves?

OK, maybe not a dichotomy, but at least a strong correlation :-) It's harder than it seems to make up a system that's a) as simple as AC/HP, b) that's a much better model of reality and c) makes for as much fun around the gaming table, especially over a long campaign with a lot of fighting in...

    Why rename HP & Saves?

Agreed. But you don't want to model fatigue. You want to use hit points, because they are an easy and fun game mechanic. You invoke fatigue to try to fool people into thinking hit points are halfway sensible. If the idea was to model reality, we would have a much different system. It might...

    Why rename HP & Saves?

What's being ret-conned? Hit points were always about luck and skill turning wounds into nicks and scratches.

    Why rename HP & Saves?

They're a totally "gamist" construction. Their greatest strength is that they make for more fun gameplay than spiral-of-death mechanics. Their greatest weakness is that they do not model reality at all, and thus engender nearly constant message board discussion.

    Why rename HP & Saves?

True, but it's defenses that evolved from 3e saves. 4e saves are a new mechanic, or, more accurately, an evolution from 4e effect durations. I think they're good changes - I just know I'll trip over my tongue a couple of times. "Make a Reflex save -- I mean--" -- and probably make mistakes like...

    Why rename HP & Saves?

A run on sentience is always trouble at the brain bank. I think hit points haven't changed fundamentally since 1e: they were always a conceptual nightmare that happened to work well in gameplay. Saving throws have definitely changed meaning. It will take a little getting used to in gameplay.

    Death and -10 HP?

Interesting. I wonder what the average life expectancy of someone with negative HP is in 3e, given stabilization chances and the erroneous assumption that any number between -1 and -9 is equally likely? Does Larry Wall have a username here?

A Skill Challenge highlights the night...

One thing I'm going to miss after 4e comes out is all these great playtest reports. Maybe we can get WOTC to delay the books till July? ;)

    Disarming a character from powers?

Tying the eladrin up seems perfectly solid to me, and solves the issue nicely as far as I'm concerned. So once every 5 minutes, the eladrin can phase into the feywild, and then lie there for a few seconds, still tied up, till he reappears right where he was.
