I did this not only for multi-classing, but also for PrCs. I told players, as a general rule, not to plan out multi-classing builds or PrCs other than for theoretical exercises as they never knew where their characters would be in the world at any given time.

Actually, I believe that wrote Toughness was good for a low level one-shot or the elf wizard with low hit points due to con penalty (or was it that elf wizard in a low level one-shot?) and the problem was that they did not tell that to players.

I was going to buy MM from Amazon and take advantage of sale, but Amazon didn't have Volo's Guide to Monsters and Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes. I also went to Target as they had similar sale, but also did not have latter two books.
