    D&D 3.x [3.5] Stealthy Spell Casting

I guessed it was something like that. Have you prepared yourself for a change in action? What if the villain decides not to cast a spell, but tiptoe over and start slashing throats? That becomes a hard ad-lib DC check. Even if the silence is successful, don't forget a coup de grace is not...

    D&D 3.x a monster problem in 3.5

I, too, doubt this is the answer you're looking for but could it be the "Voidmind Creature/Grimlock" from p. 187 of MM3? Basically, mindflayers eat part of someone's brain and then put stuff in it that then controls the body. Have you checked out the Monster Index? Maybe the names will ring a bell.

Building a PC based on personal tastes, and not an optimized build!

ulp. I'm ashamed of myself for implying that. What I should have said is that I far favor players who go more for roleplaying than for those who optimize over roleplaying. The best role-player I have ever seen (except for myself:D) was also the absolute best tactical player I think I will ever...

    Talk me down: Withdrawal

Sorry, I forgot to answer this one. The worst thing that could happen is that under the withdraw rules, either PCs or monsters could effectively avoid any melee attacks forever dependent on terrain (all it takes is a forested area). A creature would have to come up with some maneuver that forces...

    Talk me down: Withdrawal

Actually, the other can't just charge after him. Since withdraw is a double move the fleeing creature is not limited, IIRC, on his path. A Charge, OTH, must essentially be in a straight line that is unblocked. Thus the fleeing creature can move off, go around a corner and hide behind a wall. The...

    Talk me down: Withdrawal

That's what I have been allowing as my version of withdraw. However, the RAW doesn't allow it (hence the house rule). In RAW, you can't step and take a move action. Further, Withdraw allows a double move which is not equivalent to a step + single move. That's the crux of my distaste for RAW...

Are you in the RPG closet?

Nope, I never hide it (except I don't talk about it around my wife's colleagues). Of course, I'm in computers so it's no big deal. One of my wife's colleagues, OTH, was hugely in the closet. Whenever we were together in public it was absolute taboo to talk gaming.

Building a PC based on personal tastes, and not an optimized build!

Especially talk to your DM. Quite frankly, I far favor players who go the non-optimized route over the optimized. That is, I know that optimized fighter can handle two bad guys, so I'm more likely to give him two and the role-player only one. I treat it like the more optimized you are, the...

Stats based on genetics + upbringing

Yes, I was limiting it to three 'genes' (one of which had negatives) and three 'events'. I have no problem with the mathematical probabilities/matrix. But then I started to get way too complicated by adding skills/feats to the 'events'. For example, 'Farm-boy' automatically gave you handle...

AD&D 2E 2E Question - and maybe more to come.

Actually, forget all the crap that I, and others posted. This is the best advice:

    D&D 3.x [3.5] Stealthy Spell Casting

For a modern analogy, I would consider it the difference between someone speaking normally in a conversation vs. someone speaking on a cell-phone. The cell-phone speaker tends to be much louder. So I would agree with frank: -5. I did a double take because I forgot the PH had misprinted the...

    Using Scrolls & potions

See, this is why everyone should check out the forums, IMO. I've probably been doing it the wrong way for 30 odd years, and it either changed and I didn't notice, or no one ever caught it. Really, though, it makes sense because it would kind of suck to find a scroll spell and put it in your...

    D&D 3.x 3.5 Question - Single or Multiple Checks

You can't First Aid yourself because you would be unconscious. You can't do Long Term Care because " You cannot give long-term care to yourself. " However, I've never seen a DM exclude the healing character when the entire party is under long term care. You can't Treat Wound because "Another...

Did magic-users use weapons more often in older editions?

I use to think D&D meant "daggers and darts" (OK, not really). In my experience, as it seems a lot of people, we used daggers and darts a lot. We also tended to multi-class so as to use 'real' weapons. We also tended to have an obligatory free wand of magic missiles.

    Question about casting spells/terrain/crafting

I feel your pain. When I first started DMing, there was only MM1 (then later FF) which everybody knew. So I would just use monsters as 'templates'. In addition, what can be fun (for the DM) is giving them a monster that they are sure works one way, but then actually works another. Remember...

    Using Scrolls & potions

To expound on Dandu's answer: Scrolls: "A spell successfully activated from a scroll works exactly like a spell prepared and cast the normal way." Since when you prepare a resist energy spell you have to choose the type of energy you want, then since a scroll is also prepared, the type is...

You don't play 4E, but what did they get RIGHT?

I don't but I bought it and scanned it. Some things I remember thinking: I liked the higher hp at low levels (that's in there, right?). I thought many of the actions you could take were reasonably and relatively balanced between character classes. (no more huge bennies for Ftrs from 2e) I like...

    Best character name?

So, reading these I realize maybe I'm not so bad at name creation. Puns seem to be a favorite. NPC healing Cleric: Bartholomew Terrie, aka 'Bat' Terrie

Players: it's your responsibility to carry a story.

I mostly agree with the OP. I'm presuming he's not saying the players have to create the story, just take aid in the direction. I've tried all three methods: railroad, sandbox and free form. Railroad I have no problem with as it gets things going. I, nor the players, have to sit around for...

Bracers of Striking (Magic of Faerun)

Aha, I KNEW I was missing something and Parsiflage's post helped me figure it out. I was thinking, "hey, It's not too bad, why double the cost?" After all, it doesn't increase the number of attacks you get. A 1st level Ftr would get a single attack. An 11th level with +2 bracers would get 3 +2...
