A good Knowledge check house rule?

To take that a step further, presuming a single roll, each person whose Knowledge exceeds the DC gets one of the questions or some of the questions. So in your result/5 idea: John gets an 18. Ralph a 20. George a 25. John and Ralph get a question. George gets three more.

    Huge size and AoO

Yeah, I know, but I figured if he was going to take the "no width" approach, then that seemed like an appropriate counter-response. This hearkens to the old "how can a point exist if it has no length nor width nor height?" philosophical debates way, way back in HS.

    Taking 20, Take 10

Yes, that is always a problem. Like Hobo essentially said, players who metagame need to be punished. Severely. When I start a new group I always give them one encounter that's a non-encounter. For example, in one world I've run several times, the PCs are walking down a road. I ask for their Spot...

    Huge size and AoO

Actually, it's far more likely that the 're-writers' looked at it, said "that's fine" and CnP'd it. Likewise, having no width then if you could not "pass through" it if you approached it perpendicularly. As to passing through, remember each square has it's own border. So if the line passes...

    Ghosts, telekinesis and manifestation

Interesting quandary. This seems to fall in the "because it says it in the book" category. If you still want to do it and someone calls you on it AND you don't want to use the age-old DM excuse of "because I said so" you could always try coming up with a clever reason. Such as: It's not the...

Why double on Power Attack with Two-handed?

Because they stack. Presume you have 18 STR. Then you get +6 damage with a TH weapon. Presume you have PA. If you have the BAB you can take -5 to hit and do 5 pts. extra damage. If you have both, you can take -5 to hit and do +11 pts. damage!

    Taking 20, Take 10

Um, I hate to be nitpicky but wouldn't that literally require days? Yes, I know, technically you don't increase the time by a factor of 20 but it's implied, so 20 d4 + 20 hours. BTW, love your *face palm* quote. I've done exactly that, though I wimped out after 10 rounds, not 20.

    Taking 20, Take 10

Quite often. What you have to remember is that the Take's take time. The requirement for Take 10 is that you can't be threatened or distracted. The requirement for Take 20 is that you have plenty of time (20 rounds). Take 10 simply means that you have time to be more careful about what you are...

Another "how do you read this" thread

You'd be surprised. I'm a lazy DM so I generally don't concern myself with spells. Instead, I require my players to know their spells. So if you tell me a spell works a certain way, I'll accept it. However, I periodically check a spell to check the players or when something sounds hinky...

I forgot he probably already has a PC created. If you had specialized in Abjurer you don't lose another school.

Funniest thing a players character ever did?

I'm not sure if it's supposed to be funniest or dumbest!:p I had one guy tell the players that if you jumped off the top of the cathedral you would gain the ability to fly. He did so (knowing about extreme weather conditions there) rolled really, really well, and FLEW! Two others jumped to...

    Dicing NPC Conflict

Just to clarify for my own sake. When I first read your thread I was under the impression the 'honor-challenge' was a one creature vs. one creature thing (despite your mention of the mass combat system). Now, it truly looks like a full on battle. So there is no one guy vs. one guy honorable...

A good Knowledge check house rule?

Quite frankly, I hate the current 3.5 system of Knowledge checks for monster knowledge. The rules are too ambiguous for my taste. You know, the whole if you exceed it by five you get another bit of information. It could be that our DM simply doesn't give what I consider enough. For example a 30...

    Stupidest things PCs/DMs have done

I can't remember if I said this, but ... We had a player who simply did not understand cause and effect. Traveler: He was piloting a ship. He saw a big red button. He pressed it. *BOOM* (He did that twice) Runequest(?): He picked up what he thought was a wonderful magic item. He used it...

    Prestige Class advice

What he said. For example, if you wanted a bonus metamagic feat (instead of a bonus feat) there's the Incantatrix (if you have Iron Will). If you simply wanted Weapon Focus, there's the War Wizard (requires some crappy metagmagic feats).

Another "how do you read this" thread

I was going to make this a poll but my system fragged on me. A spell reads: "One creature/level, no two of which can be more than x ft. apart" How do you read this? Argument 1: It means what it means. Each creature must be within x ft. of every other creature. It doesn't say diameter/radius...

    Huge size and AoO

@ frank: Yeah, that's another one that I personally dislike and have been fortunate enough to get away with it without anyone noticing. Yes, if you're behind the wall you should get cover and the other guy doesn't. But, consider the two bowmen trading fire across a low wall and both are either...

Why double on Power Attack with Two-handed?

Max, Monty, I'm not sure you understood the question. Rephrased: Why does two-handed Power Attack get double bonus while two-handed Strength is one and a half times ? I think Uder and Hobo are probably right. At least it sounds like what my friend had said, but, then again, I seem to remember...

    Dicing NPC Conflict

I like HoboGod's idea. The only problem is that things never seem to work out the way you might think it will. That's part of the beauty of D&D or RPGs in general. Do you HAVE a predetermined outcome? In the past, I simply 'fake'-rolled dice behind the screen with appropriate winces and cheers...

    Huge size and AoO

Yet it's equally plausible that each section was written without regard to the other section. Likewise, it's plausible that things were added at differing times. For example, why does it say "through a ... border that ... provides cover", yet it doesn't for creatures ("through a square")? If...
