D&D In a Castle Organizer to Launch D&D Dungeon Master University

I think that most of the foundry mods are free and Patreon can provide all the maps and music you could ever need for less than $20 a month. The bigger question with polished games is the prep time to put all these elements together. We kind of touched on it when we talked about Landing Pages...

As long as it’s nothing like Strixhaven 😜

D&D General Weapon Mastery - Yea or Nay?

It’s a good principle. You should play your character for as long as you enjoy playing your character. The point at which you stop enjoying it, well you get my drift. If a not-enjoyable character can be made enjoyable by changing a relatively minor detail then I honestly don’t see a problem...

By that logic why not give wizards access to all their spells? They can only cast one per round.

Dungeon Mastering as Management: A Leadership Case Study

On this basis there are a hell of a lot more books on DM advice out there than it would first appear. I revisited How to Win Friends and Influence People recently, and it struck me: Dale Carnegie would’ve made a hell of a Dungeon Master. Not because he’d know the rules (he wouldn’t), but...

Dungeon Mastering as Management: A Leadership Case Study

So I’ve been reflecting on the curious overlap between Dungeon Mastering and professional management. Not the “I’m the boss” kind of management, but the “I’m responsible for people with wildly different goals, temperaments, and attention spans, and I need them to work together without setting...

D&D General Weapon Mastery - Yea or Nay?

I kinda get why being able to switch them was added into the rules. If your fighter selects short sword and longsword but then finds a wondrous magical battleaxe it’s a bit crappy find a big chunk of your skill just doesn’t apply. Or perhaps their preferences change in that character. You...

D&D General Did 5e 2024 Not meet the economic goals set, and if not, why not?

I think it will show ongoing sales of the core books predominantly. Given how late in the quarter dragon delves was released.

Has this thread been forgotten? Indications generally seemed pretty rosy. Does it look like a dying/failing game? We should get the Q2 investor report next week. https://www.enworld.org/threads/according-to-the-hasbro-q1-earning-call-d-d-sales-are-up-substantially.713075/

Im kinda ok with that. Don’t really want to go back to the days of having 3hp at 1st level, a 22% chance of being able to pick a lock and 1 spell per day (which might be cantrip). 😉

I thought you liked Level Up though? That had undeniable power creep on 5e? A whole suite of extra abilities were added to every class? It’s not a problem but seems like a contradiction.

I get it though. It’s understandable for folks to want to enjoy a little bit of schadenfreude when there’s a chance something they like don’t like will diminish in comparison to something the do like. I’d be the same. We just shouldn’t take it too seriously if it turns out it’s speculation...

D&D General Did 5e 2024 Not meet the economic goals set, and if not, why not?

Eh. The article is from ICv2 which you just said was a credible source? Or is it only the articles there that you agree with that are credible sources. Bookscan is a sliver of a slice of the numbers. Great to discuss, and a good starting point, but they have to be put in context.

It’s all relative though right? If the monsters also creep what’s the problem?

D&D General Did 5e 2024 Not meet the economic goals set, and if not, why not?

I was reminded of this article on ICV pointing out the many errors in the claims made by just one of those people ‘studying the numbers’. Bookscan data isn’t reliable. It doesn’t include all the hobby store sales if any, online retailers or VTT/digital sales. My favorite quote from the article…...

D&D General Did 5e 2024 Not meet the economic goals set, and if not, why not?

Does D&D need to be a tightly balanced system? Is there no room for people who value different things from the game? The more I play games that don’t attempt to be balanced, the more I realize it has little bearing on how much fun the game is.

D&D General Did 5e 2024 Not meet the economic goals set, and if not, why not?

There’s been a similar reaction to every edition change and half edition change of every game that has ever been made. The reaction even here is mild as milk-water by comparison. Some like the changes and think they’re better, others don’t like them and either threaten to stick with the...

D&D General Did 5e 2024 Not meet the economic goals set, and if not, why not?

I don’t recall the Jem quote, can you point me to it? I think a warlocks 3 spells per combat don’t last very long. Particularly where disproportionately useful low level spells take up the same slot as that 5th level spell. Counterspell, shield etc. 2 or Even 3 short rests doesn’t make them...

D&D General Did 5e 2024 Not meet the economic goals set, and if not, why not?

The downgrade in divine smite and a few key spells more than balances out monks and martial’s getting some sugar. It feels like the difference in difficulty is negligable. Original feats are really very mild in balance terms.
