"sleeper" spells you didn't realize were so good

Players Handbook 3.5 p.262 'Polar Ray Evocation [Cold] Level: Sor/Wiz 8 Components: V, S, F Casting Time: 1 standard action Range: Close (25 ft. + 5 ft./2 levels) Effect: Ray Duration: Instantaneous Saving Throw: None Spell Resistance: Yes A blue-white ray of freezing air and ice springs from...

    Scorching Ray

How does this spell measure up: Freezing Ray Everything as Scorching Ray, except it deals cold damage, deals 3d6 per Ray, 2 rays at 6th, 3 rays at 9th? (It annoys me a little bit that Scorching Ray maxes out at 11th level, when 3rd level spells like Fireball and Lightning Bolt maxes out at...

    Dodge Modification

The Souljourner's right; forget what I said above. If you really want it to just apply to the first attack each round, it propably wouldn't be unbalanced to up the bonus to +2. But I still feel the best Dodge variant is granting a flat +1 dodge bonus.

    Dodge Modification

If you don't want to beef up Dodge and just give it a +1 dodge bonus to AC (as I have), I think that your change is good. It weakens the feat a bit, but - like you said - it makes it simpler to use.

    Scorching Ray

One of the defending argumenst for Scorching Ray is that fire resistance is the most common energy resistance. So if I make a Freezing Ray spell should it do 4d6 or 3d6 (or something other) per ray?

    Scorching Ray

And your players are still using it and are happy with it?

    Scorching Ray

Would it still be a worthwhile spell if each ray dealt 3d6 instead? (Btw Creamsteak, Slick is da man! )

You call yourself a Drizzt fanboy?

That site linked to above has a flail head made from a d20! :D Other than that, I must say that I'm not much for the 'fantasy' style of weapons they make; swords with serrated and curvy blades, etc.

You call yourself a Drizzt fanboy?

I'm aware of that, but since no sword makers I know of would be able to make it live up to this: 'Very bright was the sword when it was made whole again; the light of the sun shone redly in it, and the light of the moon shone cold, and its edge was hard and keen.', I guess I can settle for a non...

    Scorching Ray

When 3.5e arrived I remember som talk about Scorching Ray being overpowered with it's 4d6 damage per ray. At 11th level the 3 Scorching Rays will deal an average of 42 HP if they all hit, while a Melf's Acid Arrow will deal an average of 20 HP over 4 rounds, if it hits. Granted, Scorching Ray...

    Readying to cast a spell

You have to use the ready action to counterspell, and you don't have to state up-front which spell you will counter with (that's what the spellcraft check is for). The question is whether it's allowed to ready an action to either counterspell, disrupt or cast a personal spell, or if you need to...

You call yourself a Drizzt fanboy?

What? No comments on my beautiful, Limited Edition Anduril? :(

    Readying to cast a spell

Can you use the ready action with the following trigger: 'If he cast's a spell, I'll cast a spell, based on a Spellcraft check (free action).' Or do you need to state whether you're readying to disrupt, to counterspell or some other particular spell use? Example: Is it possible to ready the...

    Here you go.

You call yourself a Drizzt fanboy?

No. But I do have this. :D Mine's #3419 of the 5000 made.

<<DMs Only>> How do you let your players level up?

Here's my house rule: 'Some amount of rest/reflection/training is required to level up. Upon reahing a new level characters immediately (after 1 night's sleep) gain the benefit of increased HP, BAB, saves & (possibly) stat increase. New class abilities, feats, skills and spells require...

Math question for Critical hit house rule

I think I'll do that no matter what. You know, better safe than sorry :D

    D&D 3.x BoVD 3.5e: Hellbound!

I'm sorry, but he's the evil god IMC :D Not so much into the undead, as being the one who created the Orcs (from a shipwrecked race of humans who prayed to the wrong guy for help ...)

Math question for Critical hit house rule

Thanks a lot guys! After seing the results I'll let Improved Critical do away with the confirmation roll instead of increasing the threat range. That this sometimes will be better than Weapon Specialization makes me think that it's actually worth a feat (and Fighters will still be the only...
