    D&D 5E (2014) Mathematical Underpinnings of D&D Next

I don't pretend to be an expert on modern Magic, but I think it's about as balanced as a duel between two 3.5e dragons min/maxed with all the game's best options. In other words, it's rocket tag. ;) ...Assuming that both players can afford the good cards. If one can't, he's at a huge disadvantage.

A hard decision at the game table

Wow, that sucks. Through and through. My sympathies! :(

D&D 5E (2014) it appears to be very easy to break the game

QFT! Mistwell, you generally seem to be more calm and reasonable than this, so I'm going to chalk this up to the ambient vitriol of the current edition war. Silly me, thinking I could have a civil discussion on a 5e thread. :(

D&D 5E (2014) it appears to be very easy to break the game

Please don't read into my motives. An analogy was a simple way to illustrate why a dev comment turned me off to 5e, not to paint anyone as an extremist. Because for me, it's not about extremes; I don't need people falling from a burning plane to know that I'd rather have a game with good story...

D&D 5E (2014) it appears to be very easy to break the game

To me, this is like an airplane engineer saying "It's about the ride, not the engineering." For the passengers, it is in a way about the ride; but that doesn't make the engineering any less important. I understand that not every gamer thinks that math is important. But when I hear a game dev...

D&D 5E (2014) it appears to be very easy to break the game

Sorry, all I remember is that it was in an early article about magical items, and that it killed my interest in 5e. Absolutely true; brokenness is a time-honored rpg tradition that D&D began.

D&D 5E (2014) it appears to be very easy to break the game

With dev comments like "It's about the story, not the math!" and so much focus on "Does this feel like D&D?" I'm not surprised that the play test rules are so breakable. Maybe the actual game will be better, but I won't be surprised if it's just as breakable. After all, brokenness is part of Ye...

    What are your core races?

Wood Elf: Tree-hugger race High Elf: Enlightened race Dark Elf: Angsty race Halfling: Little race Human: ... Dwarf: Grumpy miner race Orc: Brutal race Dragonborn: How did it take four editions for this to happen?! The game is called Dungeons and Dragons! This said, I don't put much stock in...

Signing up for DDI to download all the eZines - plus Terminating subs

Doing this has been in the back of my mind for a while now. Is it possible to get the mags without downloading the software that I'll never use?

    Confessions of a 4E Detractor

Kudos to you for recognizing the forum nerd rage phenomenon! A second time. ;) This exactly mirrors my attitude about 5e. Great minds think alike, eh?

    D&D 4E Reply if you love 4e

Kudos on raising the next generation of gamer, and welcome to ENworld! Six years in, and there's still no game I'd rather play or DM! And this includes card, board, video, and every other kind of game imaginable. :)

What are your D&D plans for 2014?

I'm still getting my kicks out of 4e, so no plans to change here!

    will 4.0 succeed?

I agree with you here, but a lot of gamers seem to expect their current ruleset to go untouched for many years, if not forever, and so they get in a huff over 'frequent' revisions. (Never mind that revisions are optional.) I can't count the number of complaints I've heard about 4e's errata. And...

Why do we put each other in boxes?

Because Tribalism. Because it's easy to slip into the Edition X vs. Edition Y mindset during a heated thread. I'm sure there are other reasons. As an aside, while your sig doesn't put anyone into an edition box, it's not exactly conducive to breaking down barriers either. It basically paints...

Do you like D&D or do you like RPGs?

I'm generally a D&D-only guy, but I'm not as stubborn about it as some of your group has been. All I need to hear is "I'm running game X" from a friend, and I'll give it a try. So far this hasn't happened very often; I've only tried the sci-fi rpg Blue Planet, Vamp the Masq, d20 Star Wars, and...

    will 4.0 succeed?

I suspect that the 5ish-year edition cycle is simply more optimal, from WotC's PoV. It'll be interesting to see if its third edition confirms the new pattern.

    D&D 5E (2014) Why Balance is Bad

Yes, this thread is sad. No wonder the first one got locked on WotC. Also sad that I'm starting the new year by adding another edition warrior to my ignore list.

    D&D 5E (2014) Why Balance is Bad

Tyrants don't really care about the people who get oppressed by their regimes, but I don't think that makes a good argument for totalitarianism. Also, the SPACE bar hired a lawyer and is suing due to criminal neglect.

D&D 5E (2014) Why the claim of combat and class balance between the classes is mainly a forum issue. (In my opinion)

I've had a similar experience: Pretty much everyone cares about balance to some degree or another. I've only known one player in all my years of gaming who seemed to sacrifice everything for character concept. And I think it's interesting to note, though, that he was not a D&Der; his game of...

D&D 5E (2014) What's the problem with certain types of creatures being immune to Sneak Attack?

So you're now attributing imaginary motivations to my posts instead of accepting that you have no monopoly on verisimilitude, fun, or any other Truth. Congrats, you've just made my ignore list.
