D&D 5E (2014) What's the problem with certain types of creatures being immune to Sneak Attack?

I simply wanted to have a friendly discussion about a particular comment (the first post of yours which I quoted), because I think it's selective reasoning. That's it. I'm not making an overall argument concerning 5e SA, as I'm not its target audience so I really don't care. I'm not making an...

D&D 5E (2014) What's the problem with certain types of creatures being immune to Sneak Attack?

Taking D&D fluff at face value, particularly fluff pertaining to hit points and damage, is a quick way to get nowhere. Because in D&D, and not least of all 3.x D&D, hit points and damage are abstractions. Except when they're not. As Iosue mentions, taking SA fluff at face value is problematic...

D&D 5E (2014) What's the problem with certain types of creatures being immune to Sneak Attack?

Thank you, Iosue. You nailed it, and with more eloquence and patience than I would have. :)

D&D 5E (2014) What's the problem with certain types of creatures being immune to Sneak Attack?

That's cool. I think that storytelling in a game is a bit different than storytelling in other mediums, and so rules that render PCs impotent tend not to work as well as rendering a prose character or tv character impotent. It's all good though, because nobody's preference is wrong. :)

D&D 5E (2014) What's the problem with certain types of creatures being immune to Sneak Attack?

I really don't, and I'm really not going to play twenty questions with you. You quoted my entire multi-paragraph post, none of which necessarily calls for 'description.' The onus is on you to tell me what in particular you'd like me to describe.

D&D 5E (2014) What's the problem with certain types of creatures being immune to Sneak Attack?

Describe what? How the light in your fridge goes off when you close the door? How electricity travels through various circuit elements? Or maybe how your OP is laughably narrow-minded and rudely dismissive of those who don't share your particular play style preferences? Like Hussar, I'm not...

D&D 5E (2014) What's the problem with certain types of creatures being immune to Sneak Attack?

Ah, you're now creatively justifying how the rules reflect D&D magical-physics, which is great! We can just as easily justify how SA works against zombies with a little creativity. Following your creative ideas, a crit or a SA drains more energy (HP) because it takes a lot of that energy to...

D&D 5E (2014) What's the problem with certain types of creatures being immune to Sneak Attack?

To turn your comment around somewhat, how does any character damage an undead's animating energy with mundane weapons? The energy is supernatural, and yet anyone with sufficient hit points can pick up a sword and simply stab a zombie dead as if it's a living person. D&D is the only medium I...

{Hypothetical Thought Exercise} A cosmic being annihilates your favorite version of D&D...

Wow, a Mercurius post that fits on my screen? What a pleasant surprise! :) As for the question, I honestly don't know. Maybe I'd take up 5e, maybe I'd go back to my heavily house-ruled 3.5, maybe I'd start house ruling PF to a similar degree. But 4e has spoiled me in a lot of ways, so having...

Is it possible that 2nd edition could make a very popular come back?

These threads get weirder and weirder. Might as well ask if there's any chance that Ford's Model T will make a comeback. 2e has great settings, and not much else.

Elves and Secret Doors.. how do you pull it off?

I'm not saying that the rule text isn't poorly written, or that I don't much prefer 4e's take on elves. (I do!) But I stick by my theory. I mean, early editions are notorious for poorly-explained rules. Thief skills much? ;) I can see how "An elf who merely passes within 5 feet of a secret door...

Elves and Secret Doors.. how do you pull it off?

This sounded really strange for a moment, but then I remembered that dungeon exploration operated within a round structure back then, much like combat. (I think each dungeon-round was 10 minutes?) So if 1e had action types like modern D&D does, the elf's ability would probably read something...

    Religions in D&D

Just what I was about to say. I'm sure that a few of us would love to have entire chapters in the core books devoted to religion -- just like there are gamers who love different facets of the game, like high-level play, particular settings, or particular race/class fluff. But at best, most of us...

Evolution of Rules, is it really a good thing or not?

Thanks, Morrus. It looks like Gary got involved with the wrong kind of suits, and lost D&D as part of the :):):):) end of the stick he got. I'm sure we all would have liked it to happen differently, perhaps as part of his last will and testament, but I think D&D becoming company property was...

Evolution of Rules, is it really a good thing or not?

Luckily I go to school in a big city, so I don't have to drive anything! I'm so modern I'm pre-industrial. ;)

Evolution of Rules, is it really a good thing or not?

Admittedly, I'm not familiar with the facts of how D&D went from private property to company property. At the risk of derailing the thread, is there somewhere I can get them?

Evolution of Rules, is it really a good thing or not?

I've never really understood this attitude. I mean, of course Rufus Wainwright isn't a Beatle, but I like his rendition of Across the Universe ten times more than the original. Does that mean I don't respect and recognize the Beatles' greatness? No. They get props for writing a song that people...

Evolution of Rules, is it really a good thing or not?

Yup, innovation is what separates humanity from the rest of the animal kingdom. It's how we have our hobby, and the free time to play it. Innovation can result in mistakes, but overall it's a very good thing. Unless you're of the opinion that caveman-style subsistence living is superior to...

How involved are you in D&D's "metaplot"?

I'm pretty much in your boat; the only published setting I still give two hoots about is Planescape, and I still pretend that the whole Faction War thing never happened. I liked the DL Chronicles when I was a kid, but never actually played DL. I read a few 2e-era FR novels, but rarely play the...
