    The ripping of character sheets

I keep my character's corpses in a folder, and one each I write a header (or cover page, if necessary!) detailing how they died. Every now and then I leaf through them and mourn, but mostly I use them as proof of who had the most grand and spectacular death scenes.

    Incantations?

My suggestion would be to take the Expert NPC class as is, and then add one "free" incantation per level. This would require a great deal of work on the part of both DM and player, because incantations don't lend themselves well to low levels, but I think it would work in the long run. For low...

The Heroes of Icemist (SmallBeginnings 2)- Interlude update 2/21/2008!

Not that youuuuuuu knoooooooow! So here's a repost of an update that got lost in the shuffle a few weeks back. It was originally posted on March somethingorother, and it had no (gasp!) intro. ***** Clean booted halfling feet bounced against half-orc pectorals as Worm hoisted Pack onto his...

    Ranger - likes and dislikes?

Nope - it was a synthesis of WoT's Woodsman (from which I took the name) and some abilities I found in AEG's Path of the Sword (from their Outdoorsman). In the end, it looked like this: BAB: Full HD: d10 SP: 6/lvl - skill list identical to current Ranger list Saves: Good Fort (only) Specials...

    Ranger - likes and dislikes?

I've been playing something very much like this for the past 4 years.

    Calculating XP drives me crazy

Looks like I came a little late to the party, but here's an idea anyway: Right now AP and XP in your new system are a function of level - and that works for games where training for level is the norm. But have you thought about reversing that? In core, level is already a function of XP, but...

Universal Spring Attack: Has anyone tried this?

Instead of giving Spring Attrack to everyone, why not go the route of "feats remove penalties" and give everyone the option of using Spring Attack, but with a hefty penalty on their attacks? Say, a -4 for every feat in the Spring Attack chain that they don't have (max of -12 for those without...

    Marshal versus Bard

Hey, right now, we can crank up a +5 to hit or damage right out the gate. I'm not sure if we can take any more!

    Marshal versus Bard

We've got something like a Marshall in our current game, as well as a Bard. While the Commander's (our version of the Marshall) bonuses have a lot more flexibility, the Bard's bonuses give more bang for the buck (and can be used for more than combat - You wouldn;'t believe the number of times...

The Heroes of Icemist (SmallBeginnings 2)- Interlude update 2/21/2008!

Heyo! I'm currently trying to recover all the intros D'Shai and I put together for the posts we've lost due to the Big Crash. Once I've got those ducks lined up in a row, I'll be reposting them on a regular schedule to mask our horrible backlog in order to whet your appetites.

    D&D-influenced Fantasy Novels

From what I gather, modern fantasy authors are actually a fairly small clique. Not only do they have ties through conferences, conventions, etc, but I hear tell that they belong to many of the same clubs and organizations (the much maligned SCA, for example, was begun by a slew of them in...

1/2 Ork 13th fighter with sunder feat chain driving me nuts

If your PCs are ~13 level, word has probably gotten around about them, including the half-orc's penchant for breaking weapons. So now is the time for your baddies to be clever and use it against them. Create a group of baddies that are immune to some sort of energy type, and have them create...

Do you stop at a certain level? Sweetspot?

I'm not sure if this is an indicator of a "deep problem" with the system. I instead attribute it to two factors: 1st/2nd Ed inertia, and accelerated level gain. If you're a grognard, go back over your AD&D material. A couple things will likely jump out at you: "name" level (that level at which...
