You're essentially using 2e AD&D dual-classing. I hated the idea of losing my previous class forever and being stuck in a new one I may not enjoy. Thankfully, 3e changed all of that.

A good method would be, you go into a deity's domain whose own portfolio and dogmas resemble your own the closest. Sort of a, " you may not know me, but I know you", situation where the deity can sense any soul worth their worship, whether they did in their short meatlife span or not.
