Ben Riggs: 'The Golden Age of TTRPGs is Dead'

It comes at the cost of driving everything to D&D - we have D&D, then a whole bunch of near-D&Ds (Pathfinder, TotV, a5e, etc), then we have a bunch of licensed games powered by 5e whether that makes any sense for the source material or not (Doctor Who, Lord of the Rings), then some legacy niche...

Ben Riggs: 'The Golden Age of TTRPGs is Dead'

What we're currently experiencing isn't, and hasn't been, a golden age for TTRPGS - it has been a golden age for D&D. That is, TTRPG, singular. A lot of what Riggs says about the end (or effective end) of the OGL is probably right, but it applies to games other than D&D. So if it is an end...

What table rules do you have? The Social Contract

I mostly only have two... though there is a secret third rule that I had to roll out after one particularly unpleasant event. 1) You have to want to be there. If you would rather be away doing something else, or you only came along because your boyfriend/girlfriend/parent/other dragged you...

Doctor Who Ncuti Gatwa Xmas Special & s1

I thoroughly enjoyed it - the best "new Doctor" episode I remember since Smith got started. And it's really nice to have a happy Doctor for a change!

AI is stealing writers’ words and jobs…

I wish I was surprised by the OP, but there's been a clear direction of travel for some time now. And, try as we might, I don't think we're putting the genie back in the bottle - this revolution is probably inevitable, so the question is more one of how we adapt than of how we prevent it. The...

AI is stealing writers’ words and jobs…

If you believe that, I have a bridge to sell you. AI will indeed lead to massive releases of wealth - right into the pockets of those who control the technology.

D&D 5E (2014) Rise Of The Drow is Three Good D&D Books In One

Thanks for that - using that code I was able to snag the PDF for $30, which is absurd value. (I would have got the hardcover, but shipping to the UK for a book that size is horrible!)

D&D 5E (2014) No One Plays High Level?

One of the smartest decisions they made with 5e was to set up the XP table so that levels 1 and 2 are intentionally much faster than the rest - they get parties into the "sweet spot" as fast as possible. It sounds like your ideal would potentially be to leave those two levels alone and then...

WotC WotC - why are we still shocked with layoffs?

I'm not shocked by the fact of the layoffs. I'm somewhat shocked by the scale of them, and by how badly they've hit the D&D team in a year when they've (again) done exceptionally well.

WotC Shannon Appelcline the layoffs and the OGL fiasco.

Yeah, that was dealt with a few pages up-thread. The short version is that I had misremembered.

    D&D General What’s your D&D New Year’s Resolution?

To finish writing up my current campaign. I'm about 6,000 words from my target count, so it would be good to get it done. (I don't actually need to write it up to run it, but it's a personal goal to do so for this campaign.) To conclude my current campaign well. For... reasons, it will be my...

WotC Shannon Appelcline the layoffs and the OGL fiasco.

Probably. It's just about possible it's sitting on someone's to-do list and really bugging them, enough that they get it done just to clear the item. I've had tasks like that in the past - objectively low priority, but like an itch that demands to be scratched. Barring that, though, I think...

WotC Shannon Appelcline the layoffs and the OGL fiasco.

Indeed. As I see it, there are three basic possibilities. From most to least likely (IMO): - They may have expressed nothing more than an intention to post the 3.x SRDs, possibly with a timeframe. That's not a promise, so there's no question of dishonesty regardless of what happens. - They may...

WotC Shannon Appelcline the layoffs and the OGL fiasco.

Well, unless they did indeed make the promise while knowing they had no intention of actually carrying it through. I don't think that's what happened here, but I'm too old and too cynical, and have been on the receiving end of too many of those promises (from others, not WotC), to discount the...

WotC Shannon Appelcline the layoffs and the OGL fiasco.

There's also the detail of what, if anything, was actually promised. Unless someone specifically said that they would get the 3.x SRDs under CC by the end of the year (as opposed to "we'll try", "we'll look into it", or "hopefully by..." - all of which I would think are much more likely), then...

    D&D General D&D Loyalty?

I haven't played any RPG other than D&D 5e for some years now. Despite that, I have no loyalty at all to D&D (5e or otherwise), and even less to WotC/Hasbro. Right now, if it all just disappeared overnight I'm not sure it would raise so much as a shrug.

WotC Shannon Appelcline the layoffs and the OGL fiasco.

Until it's tested in court, it's not really worth arguing. And if Roe v Wade can be overturned, all bets are off. Truth be told, WotC probably have succeeded in killing off the OGL - nobody with any sense would tie the fate of their business to that license now. I think we're extremely lucky...

WotC Shannon Appelcline the layoffs and the OGL fiasco.

I had misremembered. Apologies. Nonetheless, prior to 2003/04 it seemed most (though not all) third-party publishers were using the d20 license. After the insertion of the morality clause the d20 license dropped sharply out of favor, and OGL-only products became the norm.
