WotC Shannon Appelcline the layoffs and the OGL fiasco.

Monte Cook said as much in his "review" of 3.5e back in the day (sadly, I haven't been able to find it to link). Whether the timeline was accelerated due to Hasbro or because of the well-documented collapse in 3e sales is open to debate, of course.

WotC Shannon Appelcline the layoffs and the OGL fiasco.

How so? WotC issued an updated SRD for 3.5e, including materials that hadn't previously been opened. In fact, IIRC the OGL wasn't actually a particularly big deal in 2003. Most third-party publishers were instead using the d20 license (as that allowed, indeed required, them to declare...

Dungeon Delver's Guide In Polygon's Best TTRPG Books of 2023!

    Congratulations! Well deserved.

D&D 5E (2014) When did you last buy a WotC D&D5e product? (not a third party or DM Guild)

5e was the revised "Starter Set", late last year. About a minute ago - I've just spotted that Amazon UK have the new Phandelver book at 39% off, which is low enough for me to give it a go. I've bought a number of 2nd Ed "Spelljammer" and "Dark Sun" PDFs this year. I'm not boycotting them, but...

Doctor Who Ncuti Gatwa Xmas Special & s1

It's totally crazy to have a hidden signal in every TV transmission, that lies undetected until some threshold of access is passed, and then wreaks havoc. :D

D&D General Tech in DnD; What should be included and how much is too much? (+)

This. And there should be no stigma associated with not including specific elements, even in published settings - pretty much everything can be appropriate somewhere, but almost nothing is appropriate everywhere.

How can we sleep while our game is burning? Or, how many problems?

The only game I ever abandoned was due to a singularly bad experience. In all other cases, I've gradually drifted away, generally due to a switch to a newer version. So... dunno, really. :)

Doctor Who Ncuti Gatwa Xmas Special & s1

We only saw him briefly, but I thought NG did really well with the role in that time. RTD is very much a mix, but I saw enough to look forward to what they do at Christmas. Hopefully we won't see Tennant again for a good number of years. I've nothing against the guy, but he needs to be well...

OSR BECMI, how do you say it?

I'm not sure I've ever actually said it out loud. But I'd go for B.E.C.M.I.

Which RPGs did you play in 2023?

D&D 5e, and not much of that. :(

Doctor Who 60th Anniversary Specials [[SPOILERS!!]]

I suspect that, and actually the bit in the CiN special about canon and the timelines fracturing, is a clue to something going wrong with the universe. I half expect them to push a literal Reboot button for the universe, in preparation for heading into this new Season One next year.

    Gaming Dollars Spent in 2023

You've kept much better track than I have, and have also spent considerably more than me. As far as I can remember, this has been the first year in more than three decades when I have bought no physical RPG products at all. I bought a bunch of Spelljammer PDFs just after the big OGL climbdown...

What is the largest animal that you think you could beat in a fight?

And people used to laugh at 3e's "commoner vs cat" issue. :)

D&D General Worldbuilding Assumptions: On the Origin of Species

Depends on the setting, but in most they have one or more creation myths that point to unambiguously divine origin. Whether those myths are true or not, that's another question. (In at least one case, I have some species with contradictory creation myths. And, actually, both of those are true.)

The Fourteenth Doctor is Here! | BBC Children in Need 2023 | Doctor Who

If you're referring to "Bob" from Blackadder, I'm afraid not - that character was played by Gabrielle Glaister, while the companion in this, Emma, is played by Julia Sawalha. Incidentally, the character of Bob does make a brief reappearance in "Upstart Crow", David Mitchell's Shakespeare...

Filoni got a promotion at Lucasfilm

I count that as good news. While I don't like everything he's done, his ratio of hits to misses is very strong. Always a good idea to hold onto an advance your best people.

The Fourteenth Doctor is Here! | BBC Children in Need 2023 | Doctor Who

I think Steven Moffat looked into including the posters for the films in UNIT headquarters for that episode, but there was a rights issue that prevented it from happening.

What Is Your Favorite Campaign Setting?

Eberron, Spelljammer (original version), Dark Sun, Ravenloft (original version). In that order, for now - they do move around a lot. :) As for why, I'm not actually sure. I just like the settings that show us something new.

What's Your "Sweet Spot" for a Skill system?

Outside of skill-based systems, I'm not sure I've ever seen anyone hit a "sweet spot" - the closest I've seen is probably Pathfinder 1e, which combined a second set of skills, simplified some stuff, but retained a nice breadth and crunchyness. But that was still the best of a pretty bad bunch...
