D&D 5E (2014) Justin Alexander's review of Shattered Obelisk is pretty scathing

Likewise. I also find it's weirdly specific - in "Doctor Who" I have no problem with the whole "travel through time and space in a big blue box" thing, but I found I just couldn't deal with a lot of the show's handling of mobile phones.

D&D 5E (2014) Justin Alexander's review of Shattered Obelisk is pretty scathing

You need to be careful with that, though - there's a gap between "listen to the guy" and simply accepting his judgement. The latter quickly becomes an Appeal to Authority. I learned a long time ago that "critic" basically just means "someone who is paid for their opinion". Some critics are good...

D&D 5E (2014) Justin Alexander's review of Shattered Obelisk is pretty scathing

Yes. I said exactly that. When you raised the question of whether hydras actually need to eat, I was interested enough to go look it up in the MM, and having done so, I figured it might be helpful to add what I found in the thread. I wasn't making any wider point beyond that. Given the...

D&D 5E (2014) Justin Alexander's review of Shattered Obelisk is pretty scathing

Hydras don't have regeneration, so there's no reason it wouldn't have wounds. And it only loses a head (and grows two more) if it suffers 25+ damage in a single round. Even if the heads turned on one another in their hunger, it's not necessarily the case that those battles would turn fatal - it...

D&D 5E (2014) Justin Alexander's review of Shattered Obelisk is pretty scathing

One of their defining traits in the MM is "Everlasting Hunger", which talks about how they will deplete all food sources in their region and then move on, and that the beast's heads may even turn on each other in extremis. That doesn't quite mean that they need to eat, but if there's no food...

That's kind of fortunate, really, or this place would be really dull.

D&D 5E (2014) Justin Alexander's review of Shattered Obelisk is pretty scathing

I always find JA worth reading, but don't always agree. In this instance, I was already very much on the fence about "The Shattered Obelisk", and this has tipped me into 'no'. Which is a shame, as it was the only one of the 2023 releases that I had been interested in.

    D&D 5E (2024) No new OneDnD encumberance?

Agreed. As things stand, 5e has pretty much the worst of all worlds - there's an encumbrance system that is essentially useless, and which takes up the space that a 'good' system could instead fill. So DMs who want to use something better are left fighting against the rules as written, rules...

    D&D 5E (2014) Your top 3 official 5E full book adventures.

Curse of Strahd, Rime of the Frostmaiden, Storm King's Thunder. Curse of Strahd seems to be the best of the published campaigns. That said, one of the great strengths of the original was its brevity, which CoS lacks. And CoS (in common with the original) has some seriously aspects that are...

D&D 5E (2014) The Audience - Do you feel like you're the target audience?

I haven't been the target audience for D&D for at least two editions now. I don't mind whether they publish adventures or settings - I can find a use for either. What I really don't like, though, is buying what I think is an adventure and that turns out to be a setting; or buying a setting that...

How Should RPG Books Be Organized - on your shelf?

I have two sets of shelves collapsing under the weight of RPG books. One of these has non-D&D and D&D-setting books (FR, Dragonlance, Eberron, etc). These are organised alphabetically by top title (so all the Eberron books are together under 'E', for instance). In each case, the books within...

D&D 5E (2014) What Starter Set Adventure To Playtest With?

IMO, the two "Starter Set" boxes are only worthwhile for the adventures. Fortunately, "Lost Mine of Phandelver" is well worth the ticket price all by itself. "Dragons of Stormwreck Isle" is... adequate, but no better than that - I really wouldn't recommend that set. On the other hand, the...

WotC Hasbro Earnings Call: WotC/BG3 carrying Hasbro

I thought the received wisdom was that Winninger resigned in protest at the OGL thing?

WotC Hasbro Earnings Call: WotC/BG3 carrying Hasbro

There's no historical issue about people of colour being depicted as Chris Pine. Sadly, there is a big issue with their having been depicted as monkeys. So a picture of a space monkey dancing in a manner evocative of old minstrel styles is problematic in a way Chris Pine dancing is not. I've...

WotC Hasbro Earnings Call: WotC/BG3 carrying Hasbro

That makes a lot of sense. And, in fairness, it was very obviously just a mistake, and one they took swift action to correct once it was brought to their attention. So it's not a stick I hold in reserve for any time I want to beat up on WotC for a bit. But given that the question was asked in...

WotC Hasbro Earnings Call: WotC/BG3 carrying Hasbro

As you'll see in my post on the "Deck of Many Things" thread, I fully understand that mistakes happen. But this was a monumental cock-up that was directly offensive to a significant chunk of their customer base. And this was after other problematic material had slipped through, and they'd...

WotC Hasbro Earnings Call: WotC/BG3 carrying Hasbro

And was depicted in a racist manner. Given that WotC publicly apologized for it, had the artwork replaced (and may have recalled and pulped a bunch of stock - though I may be misremembering that one), I'd submit that would qualify as a disaster.

D&D 5E (2014) Deck of Many Things Release Delayed

WotC have made several mistakes in 2023, some of them huge. This is not one of them. Production issues occur. No matter what processes and protections you put in place, sometimes things slip though. It happens. What matters is how you react to it when it does happen, and in this case WotC have...

The difference being that they can ignore random posters on venerable message boards. Much harder to simply ignore the Business Vultures.
