What direction will D&D head in?

My group seems a bit reluctant to try 4e, and have suggested waiting for 4.5 or 5e to see if it heads back in a "more roleplaying, less combat focused" direction. Personally, I don't think it will... I think it will continue on the path it's on, with a heavy focus on combat powers and...

The mystery of SHADOW WASP STRIKE, Ranger3 Encounter Power

Shadow Wasp Strike also requires that the target be under the effect of his Hunter's Quarry, so I decided to tie the "cookie" to that, as well as play off of the description. I said that the Hunter's Quarry dice for Shadow Wasp Strike are not rolled, and instead automatically do maximum damage.

    Weapon Finesse?

Exactly... that is what I did, and it works fine. Powers use the listed stat, basic attacks using Light Blades (including OA's) can use Dex with the feat.

Why is Firestorm the best 19th level control spell?

For a few feats, the Cleric can multiclass to Wizard and get a Wizard Paragon Path (say, Bloodmage) and the Archmage Epic Destiny. He can heal, he can use the best spells from both Wizard and Cleric, Bolster them, and repeat them thanks to Archmage, all while wearing heavy armor.

Why is Firestorm the best 19th level control spell?

I think the frustration comes from the players and is simply expressed through the characters. It's like, "Ok, combat time!" and everyone pulls out their powers sheet to decide what they want to lead off with... and then 1 player starts throwing zones in front of them, preventing them from...

Why is Firestorm the best 19th level control spell?

You know, I keep seeing people go on and on about Legion's Hold... it really isn't that great except in the rare occasions you are literally facing a massive army of creatures that stretch to the edge of the battlemat and beyond. Most large area spells are "Burst 5 within 20 (or 10)". That...

Why is Firestorm the best 19th level control spell?

Because it also keeps your party out of the combat, or it hurts them as much as your enemies. In my party of 4, I'm the only real ranged attacker. One other character has a few ranged attacks, but then has to stitch to melee, and the other 2 characters are 100% melee. Preventing the rest of...

Why is Firestorm the best 19th level control spell?

Personally, my fixes include: 1) Reduce Firestorm's initial damage to 3d10. 2) Reduce Astral Storm's initial damage to 4d10 2a) Rebalance some other spells in the game to help even things out, strengthening some (knockdown on Meteor Swarm) and weakening others. 3) Right now, I'm not going...

Why is Firestorm the best 19th level control spell?

And on top of all that, there's still the better weapons proficiencies, much better armor proficiences, better hit points, etc that a cleric gets. Previously, that was because the Wizard was meant to be a glass cannon... best offensive power in the game, balanced by the worst defenses in the...

easier for newbies: 3.5e or PRPG?

IMO, the extra character options will take Pathfinder a little longer to get started, but the easier combat maneuvers rules will make those go faster when actually playing (if anyone decides to use them) Overall, since it is compatible, it's really not going to be a huge difference either way.

Why is Firestorm the best 19th level control spell?

Invisibility isn't that good... it requires a standard action every round to maintain, and you can't attack while invisible.

    Pathfinder 1E Pathfinder 3PP

Eric, could you try to specify some of the differences you are planning between the printed Beta version this year and the "final edition" next year? I know the final edition is significantly longer, and might include any rules changes deemed necessary from the feedback to the beta rules, but...

Increasing damage (or reducing hit points)

If you wanted, you could say that Elites get 150% of normal HP instead of 200%, and Solos get 300% instead of 400%.

Why is Firestorm the best 19th level control spell?

There should be other characters in the party that can disrupt movement, the Cleric doesn't have to do it. I'm just trying to balance the spells a bit against each other. 8-48+stat in an area, that also hits any friendlies there without a feat, vs 6-60+stat, in the same area, that only...

Why is Firestorm the best 19th level control spell?

I simply decided to lower Firestorm's initial damage to 3d10, and Astral Storm's to 4d10. Along with certain other changes (such as Meteor Swarm knocking a target prone on a hit), I think it helps balance out the Wizard and Cleric.

    House Rules Rating System

I was afraid that it might be called spamming if I posted 4 or 5 threads on my house rules, each focusing on a different part... I suppose I could do it all in 1 thread, though really getting the pdf is best since the tables are nicely formatted, bolding of the names makes it easier to read...

    House Rules Rating System

True, but not everyone is able to step outside of their own desires for "what D&D should be"... Still, I'm willing to put up my rules for a sample judging if you like. I haven't gotten nearly the feedback on them that I hoped, perhaps in part because they are 6 pages long, not a few simple...

    Quick and easy Sorcerer

It's not complicated at all. How do you mark off a power that you've used for a day? Personally, I put a little check mark next to it. So: Player: I'd like to use my level 1 Encounter power again, the one I used last round. DM: Ok, check off either your 3rd level or 7th level Encounter...

    House Rules Rating System

The thing is, not everyone is looking for the same things... one persons house rules may make the game grittier and more dangerous, another's more heroic and pulpish, because that is their vision of what D&D should be. So the gritty guy won't like the heroic house rules, and the heroic guy...

    Quick and easy Sorcerer

I think the way I did it above, allowing a Sorcerer to burn a higher level power of the same frequency in order to reuse a power, works well and is balanced. Say you are 7th level. You have 3 Encounter powers: 7th, 3rd, and 1st level. If for some reason you wanted to reuse your 1st level...
