What edition had the ideal version of each class?

Fighter: 4e (Essentials builds) Rogue: 4e (Essentials builds) Cleric: 2e with spontaneous casting Mage: hasn't been done right yet

Balance Meter - allowing flavorful imbalance in a balanced game

This analogy is so painfully tortured that we really should try to put it out of its misery, to be honest.

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D Next: Deal with it, DM?

It's possible you have. The details we've been given have been very sparse and the rhetorical promises very broad. They have made noises saying that, in effect, you could play an OD&D-style fighter at the same table as a 3e-style wizard and an AEDU-style cleric, in the same way (this is WotC's...

    Sounds like a good idea!

    Considering the "Skill Challenge"

One thing that works out is the "group skill check" where you have everyone roll against a given DC and you get a "success" if half the group passes. This can be combined with a normal skill challenge and so on. Another thing that works is simply granting successes based on described actions...

D&D 5E (2014) how 5E could work for players of all editions

Actually, didn't 3e measure things in five-foot units? Like, if you're 35 feet away from your enemy, you can run up to be 15 feet away, or be 5 feet away, but moving to something like 12 feet or 8 feet just wasn't defined. You couldn't take a three-foot step or a six-foot step in 3e, could you?

    D&D 5E (2014) What Races for the 5E PHB

Nothing wrong with furry fans wanting to play D&D. Lord knows that every edition has had plenty of anthro animals in it. If 5e is an edition for everyone, that probably includes folks who are into Ironclaw and other spin-off games which are just specialized heartbreakers.

    D&D 5E (2014) What Races for the 5E PHB

False! Rakshasas are cute cuddly wuddly purry wurry puddy tats. With their paws on backwards.

    A weighty issue

Encumbrance is probably one of the most ignored rules in any edition I've ever played in. And thank goodness for that. It doesn't add anything to the game, especially once the players are high enough level to acquire bags of holding or portable holes. I'd be happy issuing each player a bag of...

    AD&D 2E 2E specialty clerics

I'd love to see clerics as "generalist dudes in armor with melee weapons and spells who heal" drop out of the core rules entirely and their stuff get divided up between paladins and specialty priests. I doubt it will happen, but I can dream, right?

    Which Warlocks Want We?

Actually there's a long and storied tradition of heroes outwitting devils at their own game, not to mention other mortals stealing fire from the gods and so on. So I think it fits well within heroic fantasy to have both (a) mortals (a la John Constantine or Daniel Webster) who can trick devils...

Different XP progressions as a means of class balance?

Part of the problem is that this was only true at low levels. By mid-levels, when the wizard was becoming powerful, it changed around the other way. To be an effective balancing factor, the low-level magic-user should have required LESS experience (since she was so weak after expending her one...

    D&D 5E (2014) What Races for the 5E PHB

Kitties are cute and inoffensive, while the other races you named are thought of as 4e-isms, and lots of people have kneejerk reactions against anything to do with 4e.

DM Empowerment vs. Player Entitlement - Is this really that prevalent?

It also describes the relationship between all the players at the table, including the DM.

D&D 4E 4e House Rules for Closer to pre-4e feel

Yeah, that was my take on it too. I don't see anything here that really seems to be designed to appeal to pre-4e gameplay (by which I assume you just mean 3e?). Maybe if you clarify a little bit more of what premises you're shooting for, that can inform the selection of house rules to be...

DM Empowerment vs. Player Entitlement - Is this really that prevalent?

Are you saying that D&D isn't about "the DM and the players cooperating to bring about the game as a whole"? Cuz, like, it pretty clearly works that way and always has.
