    How about alignment?

This is pretty much what I see happening, with the caveat that the 9 AD&D alignments are likely to be preserved from a This Is Iconic point of view. Also, it's easy enough to collapse down from 9 to 5, 3, any lesser number. Harder to go the other way. Which is why the default will be 9 and...

    How about alignment?

"True Neutral," in some editions of D&D, really does mean something different than "Unaligned."

SoD, how can we accommodate everyone?

Better mechanic! You need to fail a Perception check or else you turn to stone. :D

    Casters and Multiclassing

I would have liked 4e multiclassing a lot better if you'd been able to swap powers freely without requiring extra feats to be spent. Sort of like you can do with themes and some racial powers without needing to burn feats.

D&D 5E (2014) Hope for an open GSL?

How would that work? As I see it, it's kind of naive to think of 3PP as anything other than competitors. There's one model that could have worked -- if WotC aggressively mined open content from 3.x products and just incorporated them back into their own products to save on R&D costs. However, I...

[Very Long] Combat as Sport vs. Combat as War: a Key Difference in D&D Play Styles...

I'm usually a CaS GM, but I may steal this for my next campaign start.

    Getting rid of "Taking 10"

You can't take 20 when jumping over a pit. You can only take 10.

    Getting rid of "Taking 10"

"Michael Jordan taking 20" would be Michael Jordan getting an unlimited number of basketballs and being able to take his time on each shot. He'd eventually make a basket. "Multiple takes from actors when making movies" is taking 20.

What is meant by Exploration play?

    (a) It's easy to minimize "dungeon crawling" in a D&D game. However, (b) Nobody at the start of the thread said anything about about playing D&D "without dungeon crawling."

    Getting rid of "Taking 10"

If the trap can spring or the difficulty increases with each roll, then it clearly falls outside of the stated uses for "take 20." So what's the problem?

Do you think magic missiles is overpowered?

A lot of those damage boosts you're talking about are based on "damage rolls" and the current version of Magic Missile doesn't have a damage roll.

SoD, how can we accommodate everyone?

As someone who started with AD&D, I really wish you wouldn't simplify this to say that players from earlier editions want save-or-die and players from newer editions do not. It's just not that simple. You admit it's "far from universal" so what's your point with these kinds of statements in the...

Didn't Monte invent Passive Perception in an L&L column?

What is meant by Exploration play?

What kind of extensive support do you feel could be given for the aspect of play you like? What kind of support has it gotten in previous editions? I'm wondering how you see the rules doing this support. I hear about "supporting exploration" but really all it does feel like is ten foot poles...

Combat as Sport or Combat as War

D&D 5E (2014) Considering the D&D Next Playtest in Light of the WotC Seminars

Actually we don't know that for sure in 5e. It's possible that at level 4, a crit could still take out the fighter with one shot.

D&D 5E (2014) Considering the D&D Next Playtest in Light of the WotC Seminars

Agreed. However, it's possible that they aren't shooting for goal (1) necessarily. There are play styles which favor the idea of characters being disposable, especially at level 1 -- "just roll up a new one and continue!" It's nothing I particularly enjoy, but it's entirely likely that...

What is meant by Exploration play?

That's what interests me most, but I'm not holding my breath for it in 5e. I suspect that falls under "role playing" in the three-pillars model. I hope I'm wrong on this.

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D Next Blog - The Fighter

We're not talking about a modern military mindset, we're talking about adventurers in D&D, who since the very earliest days of the game have always, always had warriors/tanks/defenders keeping the bad guys off the squishy spellcasting wizards. If you don't want to play something like that, you...
