    D&D 5E (2014) D&D Next Blog - The Fighter

What, not a barbarian? ... Curiously enough, Conan gets called a lot of things in the titles of his stories but "fighter" isn't one of them! Clearly Conan is a hybrid Barbarian/Rogue/Avenger/Warlord/Hunter ...

    Assassin in DDN

Surely James "License to Kill" Bond is an assassin archetype and not just a spy, if anyone is.

What is meant by Exploration play?

I hope they don't mean "old school dungeon crawling" but I think this is part of the bone they are trying to throw to the OSR crowd. I read "support for exploration" as meaning "10 foot poles and having to map every corner of the dungeon."

D&D 5E (2014) D&D Next Blog - Wizards Like to Roll Dice Too

Yeah, I really wish the polls were better written. I suspect they're just meant to be used internally to bolster whatever point Monte or someone else is trying to make, and thus waving around numbers like "47% of the players neither disagree with nor agree with this idea!" is just rhetorical...

D&D 5E (2014) Who really IS the target audience of D&D Next?

I think WotC are paying a lot of lip service right now to the earliest gamers ever crowd, the BECMI folks, the OSR guys. They're trying to get them on board with this new edition. I suspect a lot of it is just lip service, to be honest. I think they're going to promise a lot to old-time gamers...

D&D 5E (2014) D&D Next Blog - Wizards Like to Roll Dice Too

How about all rolls (including attack rolls) are player-facing? Meaning the players roll all the dice, always, and the DM never does. The DM always takes 10 on the roll. Player A casts fireball. The monsters' defenses are 16 -- player A rolls 1d20 + something vs. the 16 DC. Player B gets...

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D Next Blog - The Fighter

The idea of the fighter as the "tank," fending off attacks against the wizard (or cleric or rogue or whoever), originated at the tabletop, not "in pixel land." Anyone insisting that "ZOMG TEH VIDEO GAMEZ!" are driving a mechanic really needs to explain what video game uses that mechanic, e.g...

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D Next Blog - The Fighter

I thought in earlier editions of D&D, the tactic was almost always to concentrate on the wizard (or spellcasting bad guy), the guy who can blow you up with a thought, and the fighter (or ogre) was just the meatshield in the way. I can't imagine a party (or group of bad guys run by the DM) in...

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D Next Blog - The Fighter

I don't know anything about the 3.x Warblade. Can you give me a rundown on how it works?

    Gamist, Narrativist, and Simulationist

There's minor support for the "light gamism" talked about in some of the spin-off organized play programs, such as Lair Assault and D&D Encounters.

    D&D 5E (2014) Should 5e have a "default setting" and cosmology?

Biggest problem with Channel Divinity is that they didn't allow in the builder what they said in the books you should do. I.e., allow for painless refluffing. For example, if I had a campaign where I worshiped the God of Light and Stone, I should be able to take either "Moradin" feats or "Pelor"...

    D&D 5E (2014) Should 5e have a "default setting" and cosmology?

Hold on a sec. You defined the "PoL" setting correctly, but then you say that they added PoL history and background into Forgotten Realms and Eberron. When exactly did they do the latter? Because there's no Arkhosia in 4e Eberron. There's no "battle between the gods and primordials" in 4e...

    Proposed Damage / Healing System

So just to be clear here, you're arguing that the mechanic behind healing surges is a good model for the appropriate level of complexity you'd like to see in 5e?

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D Next Blog - A Close Call with Negative Hit Points

I don't like some of the death spiral rules you guys are proposing. I think there are good reasons to avoid layering on penalties to characters who have been knocked down once or twice (or even more). It can cause an overall loss of enjoyment to know that not only have you had the crap beat out...

    Proposed Damage / Healing System

Oh, so nothing to do with healing. I thought you were talking about the topic at hand, but it's just generalized 4e-bashing. Gotcha. Carry on as you always do! Admin here. A better way to phrase this would have been "But aren't we talking about healing?" I've already spoken with KarinsDad...

    Proposed Damage / Healing System

On what basis -- other than your well-known disdain for 4e -- are you basing the idea that WotC didn't do a good job on analyzing the math?

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D Next Blog - A Close Call with Negative Hit Points

You're not reading the full rules then. It's in "Death and Dying" in the online compendium, and says exactly: Whenever they say "a rest" it means "a short rest or extended rest" unless they specifically call it out. They didn't here, so it means either short or extended. They didn't change...

You are incorrect. Failed death saves reset after a short rest (and extended).

    D&D 5E (2014) Magic Item Slots in D&D Next

I have 10 fingers. Why has D&D always limited me to only 2 rings, anyway?
