Stuff D&D players never say (except when they do)

    Thank you for saying this.

Sexism and presumed sexism in RPGs

Why did I look at this thread? :(

New RPG Company Casting All Women for Genesys

I gotta bail from this thread. A lot of you guys here are making me feel less welcome in gaming, and I've been doing this most of my life.

New RPG Company Casting All Women for Genesys

It's real hard to be a roleplayer these days and not find sexism (or racism, or heterosexism, or cissexism) in any given product. Some of that is endemic to the sexist society we live in, and many games are making progress compared to years ago. You might have to only play indie games produced...

New RPG Company Casting All Women for Genesys

If it was true, and you were wrong about this, how would you know? Would you be able to tell if your hobby was, in fact, as a whole, actively discouraging participation by women? I'm trying to give you the benefit of the doubt here; I'm not saying that you're sexist yourself, but that you may...

New RPG Company Casting All Women for Genesys

It's distressing to me that many men will claim there is no sexism at all in gaming, and in their attempts to "prove" it, they will resort to talking down to women, discounting their experiences, and glorifying displays of sexism. It'd be amusingly ironic if only it weren't so sad and frustrating.

    Feat pickin' time!

Yeah, there was an update/errata that removed the second "Property" line from the pact hammer. (In January 2009.)

You're misinterpreting the statistics. A hard-to-read text doesn't mean the author is brilliant. It means that he's a poor communicator who can't write effectively enough to be understood. The point of readability indices isn't to get the "highest score" so that you can feel superior to...

Time to bring back the prose?

The 3e version is also a sterile stat entry. It's just that they bother to define in the spell Sleep what "sleep" means, while "unconscious" is defined elsewhere in 4e (in the definitions of conditions). Mechanically, it's all about the same, just shorter. Anyway. I really hope that those of...

Time to bring back the prose?

So when people say they want "prose," they mean that they want the D&D books written more like ... Apocalypse World, maybe?

Just let me know when we can get it; I'm totally prepared to throw money at ya!

How Do you Feel About Healing Surges? (Read First!)

That has everything to do with second wind and nothing to do with healing surges. In the Die Hard example, there's no sign of 1/4 of his hit points being used as a value, nor do we see him running out of healing surges halfway through the movie until he takes an extended rest. Your problem is...

How Do you Feel About Healing Surges? (Read First!)

That's not an example of a healing surge. That's an example of second wind.

    D&D 4E The Dispensible 4E

How do limits on the amount of healing in a day (and/or a set baseline of "this is what a healing spell does") shatter roleplaying and suspension of disbelief?

I hate to burst your bubble and your feelings of superiority, but none of those books you're naming are particularly written at a high level of reading. They're all around 8th grade level of reading, give or take. Do you understand what "level of reading" means? It doesn't mean that you get...

    Write this game for adults

I did a quick Google search and found pages like this one: Popular Eighth Grade Literature Printables for Teachers (Grade 8) - TeacherVision.com "Sarah, Plain and Tall," "Diary of Anne Frank," and Shakespeare's "Romeo & Juliet" are worthless drivel? To me, it sounds like you simply don't...

    OoTS 851

He fights like a 4th edition character in a 3rd edition world! (Lots of pushes, slides, interrupts, etc.)

    OoTS 851

You can pretty much do this in 4th edition D&D although I'm not sure if there's a power with exactly the same flavor text.

Why would you ever do such a thing as that? That's not what such a measurement is even for.
