Why? Lower writing level means it's easier for everyone to understand. This reminds me too much of Monte Cook's ideas about "system mastery." It's a kind of false elitism that really doesn't belong in the game.

I call shenanigans. Harry Potter is immensely popular, including with 8th graders, and it's written at 5th to 7th grade level. You are simply wrong.

A lot of people seem to use "healing surge" as a focus for their dislike of everything related to 4e healing. I think that may be because they haven't played the game and don't understand how the different subsystems related to healing work together.

Healing surges don't do that. Did you read the first post before replying?

I like the fixed chunk of hit points for healing powers, but I am not so crazy about the limit on number of surges per day.

I hate it when people pull out their "I'm sooooo smart" egos and start talking about things like "this was written at a certain grade level" to justify how special and smart and genius they are. The truth is, it's easy to write convoluted stuff that is at "a higher grade level," and it's harder...

Because it's a game, and games are generally better when they're fair. A game isn't fair if it presents, say, 6 options to players and half of them are really bad choices.

I'm not saying that at all. I'm saying that it's unlikely they would have given us 30 days notice (why that number? why bother with a pre-announcement at all?) today if not for needing to put out some good news about 5e. Do you really think that they were planning to announce the open playtest...

I'm surprised they put a date on it this far out. It seems to me that they needed to do something to reassure the public that the sky isn't falling due to Monte's departure, and so they announced the start of the public playtest. Otherwise, I suspect they might have kept the exact date private...
