    Which stat for init?

Different classes could have different stats to determine their initiative bonuses. But then each character would probably end up with the same approximate bonus and you might as well be rolling 1d6 anyway.

Why is the Vancian system still so popular?

There's a strong argument to be made that Vancian spellcasting as presented in D&D is, indeed, broken -- and thus in need of fixing.

Why is the Vancian system still so popular?

Well, you can do that in 4e also.

Why is the Vancian system still so popular?

Grognard nostalgia. Plus it's pretty easy to use.

    D&D 4E My 4e House Rules - Yours?

Why would you want to go back to fixed healing instead of proportional healing? Healing that is proportional to the target's total makes a lot more sense.

    D&D 4E My 4e House Rules - Yours?

The only house rule I'm using currently is "one action point per encounter."

Which Kobold feels right to You?

Yay for edition warring dressed up as "informative surveys"!

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D Next Design Goals (Article)

It seems to be, at this time, mostly a content-free column. It might have meant something back three months ago, but it didn't really say anything revealing -- or really worth reading.

D&D 5E (2014) Dear 5e design team: Please research earlier editions

Yeah! That sounds good. [removed a snarky comment]

Dude ... what are you trying to say here?

Turns and Rounds - relooking at exploration

Except that the game (in 3e and 4e) doesn't allow you to take actions in less than 5' increments, so there's a reason for that existing.

D&D 5E (2014) Dear 5e design team: Please research earlier editions

I really don't get why WotC should be expected to attend every small con that's being held. I don't see why you think Gary Con should get special treatment (other than, I guess, you go to Gary Con?). I mean, I guess I could say also that they should go to Gamex 2012 in Los Angeles, since I live...

D&D 5E (2014) How Strange should Flora and Fauna be in the Default 5E Setting?

If this irritates you about 4e, then you probably should know you're not playing 4e correctly. The rules pretty explicitly state that the Religion skill is used for monster knowledge checks for creatures with the "undead" keyword.

To Heal or Not to Heal

You should try D&D Gamma World. It's the best implementation of the 4e ruleset!

To Heal or Not to Heal

So, you want D&D Gamma World. Good choice!

D&D 5E (2014) How Strange should Flora and Fauna be in the Default 5E Setting?

I want strange and non-strange alike. I want plenty of plants and animals from around the world, not just from the middle of Western Europe. I want some parts of the setting to be populated with "normal" plants & animals, some populated with exotic magical stuff. I want it all, and I want in...

D&D 5E (2014) Dear 5e design team: Please research earlier editions

Maybe those folks from Gary Con should go to PAX. Or sign up on the WotC site for public playtesting!

Any news out of PAX East?

Also, different people at WOTC work on different things. The game designers who are creating the game aren't -- I sure hope -- the same people who are going to be writing the legalese connected with any sort of license. So the legal side is presumably proceeding along at their own pace...

Turns and Rounds - relooking at exploration

You know, a lot of people around the world, in real life, manage to keep track of time using minutes and hours, without the need for "turns." Why do we need "turns" -- which is a terrible abuse of jargon, by the way -- for tracking fictional time? Can't we just rely on players' and DMs'...

    April 3rd, Rule of 3

Out of combat, you do have full control over your own surges. You can spend as many as you want during a short rest without requiring any healer whatsoever. It's only in-combat healing that you're restricted to Second Wind as your own self-heal.
