D&D General Adventures into the multiverse

Is what online? Chaositech and Arcana of the Ancients are Monte Cook products. Chaositech is from the d20 days and Arcana is a 5E book based on his Numenera setting.

    D&D 5E (2014) Strength Clerics

Nothing wrong with a Life cleric with plate and a shield tanking on the front lines with spirit guardians and spiritual weapon. You aren't using Strength for damage mind you but that's not really the cleric's forte, although Divine Strike does help in that department.

D&D General Adventures into the multiverse

I did some brainstorming on a campaign that was a mashup of Planescape and Spelljammer, with lots of weird tech a la Chaositech and Arcana of the Ancients. Basically there was a massive cataclysm (war between an ancient civilization and elder beings/gods) that shattered the planes of existence...

D&D General Nature Clerics vs. Druids?

I never understood why Nature clerics get heavy armor. Conceptually they overlap too much for my taste but then heavy armor totally breaks any sense of logic. I did some brainstorming on a new class that took the druid chassis, removed wild shape, and added in the Nature cleric domain features...

D&D General The Best Non-D&D System for Each D&D Setting

Savage Worlds is great, especially for low-magic/sword & sorcery settings. There are a few products for that genre too: Beasts and Barbarians, Lankhmar, and Solomon Kane to name a few. SW is great for any low-magic setting really. The magic system is incredibly modular and not tied to classes...

    D&D 5E (2014) A case for weapon master

I was being tongue-in-cheek but basically, yes. If you search - even just this forum - you will find a multitude of discussions on feats. And if you cull the data, you'll find a consensus has generally has been reached. Is design by committe infallible? Of course not. But the information...

    D&D 5E (2014) A case for weapon master

Why not? I trust the consensus that the interwebs has determined. If I was DM, I would let you spend a single feat and have whatever armor and weapon proficiencies you wanted.

    D&D 5E (2014) A case for weapon master

Weapon Master is awful. Honestly if a player had a cool character concept and they wanted to use a weapon that their class didn't allow, I would just give it to them. Every time I see these threads pop up, it affirms my belief that the feat system needs to be throw out and rebuilt. Every feat...

D&D 5E (2014) How Wotc can improve the adventure books.

I abhor how small the maps are in the 5E modules.

D&D 5E (2014) small Monk change to decrease Dex dependency

I like it for everything except replacing Str or Dex for attack and damage rolls. As @dnd4vr mentioned, it's basically how all the classes are built. The monk is unnecessarily MAD and one of the main contributors to its flaws. Removing some of that dependency goes a long way to give the monk a...

D&D 5E (2014) small Monk change to decrease Dex dependency

I do like this but I'm slightly "concerned" (for lack of a better word) with using proficiency to increase AC. It doesn't have any precedent anywhere else in the rules. Proficiency applies to saving throws but I don't believe it is used to add to AC anywhere (correct me if I'm wrong). @cbwjm...

D&D 5E (2014) small Monk change to decrease Dex dependency

Overall I like the monk class. But I don't like how heavily skewed it is to Dex builds. Strength-based monks are almost inferior in every way unless focused on grappling, and even that is better server by other classes. I'm starting to introduce my son to D&D and he's really excited to play a...

    medieval architecture in tropical climates

Wow this thread is awesome! I love talking about this kind of world-building. So much inspiration in this thread.

    medieval architecture in tropical climates

Sort of, although I would replace Roman/Gothic with "traditional D&D fantasy." I probably could have posed my question more clearly. Basically what would a medieval European (or traditional fantasy) culture look like if it originated in or migrated to a tropical climate? I'm certainly aware...

    medieval architecture in tropical climates

I've been brainstorming on a D&D campaign using Saltmarsh as the home base but set in a region similar to the Caribbean (lots of islands, tropical/tropical savanna climate). I always try to find imagery when working on a campaign both for my own inspiration but also to set the stage for the...

D&D 5E (2014) How can you add more depth and complexity to skill checks?

I do two things (behind the scenes): degrees of success and bonuses for being proficient. Degrees of success means a higher roll may give you additional information (like from a knowledge) or a generally better result. When disarming a trap, perhaps you can reset it without indicating it was...

Ruins of Symbaroum [5E] - The Promised Land: An Interview With Free League Publishing

I have no previous knowledge of this setting but looks really cool. I really like some of the rules changes they've made! Don't mean to derail the thread but I'm curious how they are getting around the 5E license. They are reprinting a lot of content, like class abilities (although they have...

D&D 5E (2014) A First Look at Tasha’s Lineage System In AL Player’s Guide - Customizing Your Origin In D&D

Fine. It only mostly removes the choice. I don't like the idea of race having no effect on your ability scores. Sure it's a sacred cow but it's a good one that makes the choice meaningful.

D&D 5E (2014) A First Look at Tasha’s Lineage System In AL Player’s Guide - Customizing Your Origin In D&D

I'm all for more customization but this removes race as a choice. It's a la carte ability score bonuses. I still like my rule better: If a race increases an ability score by 2, you may instead increase that score by 1 and increase another ability score of your choice by 1. Simple as that.
