D&D General How Much Dungeon Crawling Do You Do?

I've found my group likes dungeon crawling in the 25-40% range. They thrive in the social and exploration pillars but get bogged down when there's a lot of filler combat (which tends to be the case in published modules and dungeons). When I do bring a dungeon into the campaign, I really try to...

I bet the barbarian wants another crack at that crab.

That barbarian must have felt like a shell of himself after missing his last attack.

D&D General What Do You Miss Most About Face-to-Face D&D?

Using miniatures and sharing beer. But because of miniatures and sharing beer, we make way more progress playing online. Go figure.

D&D General Immersion: Bringing a Campaign to Life (also, setting as a character)

When creating a new campaign, one of the first and most important things I focus on is immersion. From the first few lines of the intro flavor text, I want the players to understand where their characters are right away. The cliche of course if for them to "feel like they are there."...

D&D 5E (2014) Race/Class combinations that were cool but you avoided due to mechanics?

I also wish there were other options to choose from than the mountain dwarf armor proficiencies. It's a decent ability but useless on half the classes.

D&D 5E (2014) Race/Class combinations that were cool but you avoided due to mechanics?

I've made one simple change to racial ability scores to open up options for non-standard characters: If a race increases an ability score by 2, you may instead increase that score by 1 and increase another ability score of your choice by 1. My games always use point-buy for character creation...

D&D 5E (2014) Race/Class combinations that were cool but you avoided due to mechanics?

I actually LOVED my halfling barbarian. Certainly not the best damage dealer (still decent) but he was an amazing tank. He had a 16 Dex and I went sword & board with no armor. Picked up Shield Master at level 4. Resistance to lots of damage, advantage on a lot of saves, plus halfling luck. He...

D&D 5E (2014) Race/Class combinations that were cool but you avoided due to mechanics?

Half-orc casters. I really like the dichotomy of the combination but the racial features push towards stereotypes. I don't powergame but so many of their features go unused or are devalued with non-melee characters.

    Where's the American Fantasy RPG?

Haven't seen Jim Butcher/The Dresden Files mentioned. To me it's a perfect example of modern urban fantasy. Love his stuff. I need to read more!

    Where's the American Fantasy RPG?

Totally agree, although I found Vance much more difficult to read than CS Lewis/Narnia. Narnia is more "traditional" as far as fairy tales go. Dying Earth is bonkers. It's kitchen sink world-building and Vance's writing is very flowery. Dying Earth has more of a Spelljammer/Planescape vibe than...

D&D 5E (2014) Which version of the Ranger?

Looks more like a "beastmaster" base class than a ranger variant.

D&D 5E (2014) Which version of the Ranger?

The Artificer class has a much better companion mechanic than the PHB. My best advice is to do a search. You'll find multitudes of discussions and homebrew rangers to sink your teeth into. Absolutely use the UA Alternate Class Features at a minimum. I also like combining that with the UA...

D&D 5E (2014) My Response to the "Monk Sucks" thread

This is the best explanation of the difficulty "balancing" the monk's ki resource. I would also add that while the warlock is extremely-short rest dependent as well, it has more "always on" combat abilities than the monk. Hence why the monk feels so strapped to some people.

D&D 5E (2014) My Response to the "Monk Sucks" thread

I have no issues with the 5E monk. I agree it's a polarizing class in any edition but overall the 5E incarnation is pretty solid. That said, I 100% agree that the monk needs a bit more ki at low levels and the Four Elements path is hot garbage. I've been tinkering with a 1/long rest ability...

D&D 5E (2014) Another monk thread! Fixing the Way of the 4 Elements

Nuke it from orbit. It's the only way to be sure. It needs to be completely reimagined and redesigned from the ground up.

request: Give "Level Up" its own forum

Well that's the dilemma of any project. It's good to have a read on what people want but at some point, you have to turn off the noise and trust your design. It also requires setting very clear design goals for yourself, otherwise you'll constantly be influenced by the masses and never finish...
