D&D 5E (2014) Experimental Concentration Spell Stacking Houserule

Because of this thread, I started working on my "remove concentration" spell list again. As I went through it, I started thinking this same exact thing. Most of the spells I was putting on my list were single-target or self buffs, or single-target attack spells that had concentration and also...

D&D 5E (2014) Experimental Concentration Spell Stacking Houserule

I wouldn't remove concentration from any of those spells. Problem solved. If done properly, removing concentration from a select group of spells doesn't increase the power of casters. It merely makes spells that are barely used get some consideration.

D&D 5E (2014) Experimental Concentration Spell Stacking Houserule

Three things are true: Overall, the concentration mechanic has been a great addition to 5E. Some spells are hurt more than others by requiring concentration and therefore, rarely - if ever - get used. This solution is far too complex and wouldn't survive 5 minutes at the table. I agree that #2...

D&D 5E (2014) Choose your preferred Polearam Master

Muddled is kind. It's one of the biggest fails of 5E. And that's coming from someone whose favorite edition is 5E.

D&D 5E (2014) Choose your preferred Polearam Master

In other news, why is this the first time I've noticed that the spear (simple) and trident (martial) have the exact same stats, except that the trident costs more and weighs more?! 🤯

D&D 5E (2014) My one and only houserule: consequences & opportunities

Pretty standard degrees of success mechanic. Lots of other games have it built-in to their core mechanic. I do it all the time on the fly. I've also started giving priority to those that have proficiency in a skill. Depending on the nature of the check, if two players roll the same result but...

    D&D 5E (2014) Trickery Cleric gaining Proficiencies

I am also baffled why they didn't get an additional skill proficiency: Deception and Stealth are both prime candidates.

    D&D 5E (2014) "Fixing" 5e's Least Well Performing Classes

I like that this thread uses "least performing" instead of weak/sucks/underpowered, etc. Given the nature of 5E's core mechanic, I don't think any class is truly weak or under-powered compared to any other. That said, the PHB ranger sucks. It's the only class that needs a heavy revision...

D&D General What is D&D? A Universal Definition

In practical terms: killing monsters and taking their stuff.

    D&D 5E (2014) Classes that Suck

I'm starting to like proficiency bonus damage against favored enemies instead of the clunky +2/+4 progression in the UA Revised Ranger. I've also considered increasing crit range to 19-20 against favored enemies but I wonder if a flat damage bonus is more tangible for players to wrap their heads...

D&D 5E (2014) Do you play without Critical Hits?

Totally agree. Something else I’ve been experimenting with. 5E got rid of a lot of effects that made weapons cool and different. It would also be cool to give a player a choice depending on their weapon: extra damage or a status effect. Like a greatclub or maul could knock an opponent prone or...

D&D 5E (2014) Do you play without Critical Hits?

Haha I haven't got that far yet! But no reason why monsters can't keep using the current rules. Otherwise, instead of doubling their damage dice on a crit, you could max their base damage and then roll weapon dice and add them. It raises the average damage but maintains the ceiling.

D&D 5E (2014) Do you play without Critical Hits?

Fun? Sometimes. Necessary? Absolutely not. I'd actually like to see more frequent crits but less swinginess. Again, bringing back the increased crit ranges but tone down the amount of crit damage, at least the spikes. 5E is too spikey: either crits are lackluster (yay I get to roll 2d6 and got...

D&D 5E (2014) Do you play without Critical Hits?

Yes. I even want to bring back expanded crit ranges from 3ed! Crits in 5E are another system that got over-simplified. I also don't like "all dice are doubled." Creates too wide of a disparity.

D&D General good dungeons to populate a sandbox setting?

Ahh I should have specified. System doesn’t matter. I’m an old vet so have a lot of material to draw from. I’m very familiar with the core 5E options. Probably won’t use anything from TotYP because my group is fairly familiar with those adventures. The campaign wont be a hexcrawl. It’s a...

D&D General good dungeons to populate a sandbox setting?

I'm putting together a new sandbox campaign and I'm looking for a few premade dungeons to sprinkle into the local region. I'll be using Saltmarsh as the home base so it's a coastal setting with a big nasty swamp and a big nasty forest nearby. Off the coast is a large island chain, much of which...

    D&D 5E (2014) The Mystical Monk (a Monk Variant)

Wow I LOVE the idea of doing a mashup of the Monk and Mystic. I like the monk concept as a class in general but the idea of using Disciplines as one of their core mechanics is awesome. Feels much more "mystical" than the typical D&D monk. I think it could go ever further by rolling some the...

    D&D 5E (2014) (House Rule) Stalker0's Alternate Monk Class

Sorry for the bump but I must have missed this thread back in Feb. I have a player considering monk (drunken master) in a new campaign and I've been wondering about adjusting the amount of ki the monk gets. I find the regen mechanic really interesting. I assume the monk would regen ki outside...

D&D General Why Exploration Is the Worst Pillar

Exploration is actually my favorite pillar! It's literally everything when they players aren't in combat or talking to NPCs. And it's why sandbox campaigns are my favorite. But this is very accurate: Although you don't really need to "...build a world full of interesting things..." Sandboxes...

D&D 5E (2014) What To Do With Racial ASIs?

I got through about half this thread but wanted to chime in with what I've done. Generally I like racial ASIs but I am in agreement that they need tweaking. Primarily, I don't like that they "reward" certain race & class combinations. I also didn't want to reinvent the wheel too much as far as...
