D&D 5E (2014) How I would have done the Priest/Cleric class differently with Hindsight

Some cool ideas in this thread. I love this kind of discussion - bringing more customization to 5E - and there has certainly been a lot of discussion on it. When you see a lot of design work that begins to overlap, it means that a) a lot of people are thinking along the same lines and b) it's...

D&D 5E (2014) [CoS] Can powerful items be removed from Barovia? (minor spoilers)

This was my original thought but I've gone back and forth on it. I see the pros and cons for both. My group also isn't motivated by loot per se (well except for one guy :cautious:) so I know I could sell it too them. I'm currently leaning towards letting them keep stuff but I reserve the right...

    D&D General Rolling HPs

Agreed. You never see a video game where an incremental power increase is random and "locked in", unless the entire game is designed around that purpose (like a hardcore mode or a Rogue-like). Any system with escalating challenges requires a high degree of predictability, or at least knowing...

    D&D General Rolling HPs

I'll just play in a different group, thanks.

    D&D General Rolling HPs

I actually don't allow rolling anymore. You get the fixed value (average rounded up). I've tried rerolling 1s, reroll but you have to keep the second, either roll or take average rounded up, etc, etc. And invariably, somebody chooses to roll and rolls crappy or rerolls and the result is lower...

D&D 5E (2014) Changing Sneak Attack to Light Weapons

I think sneak attack should apply to all weapons, but I could see an argument for non-heavy weapons. The finesse restriction only serves to limit the character options (Strength rogues for example). I haven't see any balance reasons for the restriction. If anything, it means that all rogues...

D&D 5E (2014) What class levels have you given monsters in encounters, to give them that extra edge?

None levels. Ain't nobody got time for that. Just give the monster the abilities you want it to have. Bump up hit points, saves, AC, damage, etc, etc. It's dangerous to go alone, take this! Seriously though, Giffyglyphs's stuff is amazing. I love Darker Dungeons but his Monster Maker is...

D&D 5E (2014) [CoS] Can powerful items be removed from Barovia? (minor spoilers)

And more specifically, the Sunsword and Holy Symbol of Ravenkind. So the basic concept of Ravenloft is that the domains are prisons for the darklords created by the Dark Powers. Strahd is cursed to be forever punished for Tatyana's death. I subscribe to the idea that Ravenloft is basically a...

    D&D 5E (2014) Monster Traits?

I highly recommend Giffyglyph's stuff. Darker Dungeons is great but I recently discovered (and used) his Monster Maker and it's totally change how I approach monster design.

The Black Dahlia Murder and D&D: An Interview

Very cool. TBDM is one of the best bands on the planet.

D&D 5E (2014) One of my players married a beholder, help!?

You could also just say no because it's not possible. Does a conversation about whether a beholder can conceive with a humanoid race really need to happen?

D&D 5E (2014) Alternative Hill Giant Chief for Storm King

Cool miniature but way out of scale for a hill giant. I can't agree with your take on Guh though. She is both comedic but gross and terrifying at the same time. And given that the encounter is a potential role-playing opportunity makes it even better.

    D&D 5E (2014) Optional Rule: Subclass Gestalt

I wouldn't just outright give them the abilities of two subclasses but I'm all for opening up choice in 5E. I've been working on a system that puts all subclass abilities into a "pool" and allow a character to build the subclass they want (with some restrictions). For example, if a Lore bard...

    D&D 5E (2014) Brainstorming a new Rage mechanic

Overall, I don't have too much of an issue with the barbarian but (having played a barbarian in 5E) I do agree that managing rages/rest is extremely important - and challenging. And much more so if the campaign runs closer to the expected number of encounters/rest. Because so much of its power...

D&D 5E (2014) [5e] Are classes too generic? (Read the OP before answering)

I like the shaman archetype, and it's one that 5E is somewhat missing. I would start with the druid and replace wild shape with something: you could merge the cleric's Nature's domain or maybe use the Circle of the Stars from the recent UA. I would even let a player replace wild shape and give...

D&D 5E (2014) [5e] Are classes too generic? (Read the OP before answering)

Just make a custom spell list and use whatever base class the player wants.

D&D 5E (2014) [5e] Are classes too generic? (Read the OP before answering)

Not for me. I'd much rather have classes err on the side of generic than to specific. That's what the subclasses are for. Classes should encapsulate the broad archetypes for the setting.

D&D 3.x What ever happened to Midnight?

Nah, I wouldn't do that. They are meant to be additive to the classes. Midnight is also a harsh, low-magic campaign and the Heroic Paths are meant to compensate.
