D&D 5E (2014) Arcana of the Ancients, in my hands!

Sounds like it could be an interesting resource for a Spelljammer campaign...

D&D 5E (2014) Arcana of the Ancients, in my hands!

Monte's baseline style is a little too high/weird fantasy for my taste but his products are high quality and top notch. And interestingly enough, Chaositech was one of my favorite 3ed products. I've heard a little about this and I'm certainly intrigued. Is it just a port of Numenera? Or...

Moderation Clarification: Is there a change of policy

Agreed. I'm sorry to see him go. Seems like this could have gone differently. :(

    D&D 5E (2014) DM Guild Recommendations

I will ALWAYS recommend this! The Beast of Graenseskov, written by EN World's own @Quickleaf. It's an amazing (and complicated af lol) example of a mystery sandbox adventure. Mystery adventures are really tough to write - and run! So are sandbox adventures. This one is both! And even if you...

    D&D 5E (2014) Let's Talk About Chapter 9 of the DMG

Wow I LOVE this! While I generally err on the side of more gritty than not, I don't like the Gritty Realism option because all it really does is slow everything down. That isn't fun. But adding criteria to long rests places emphasis on its importance without being a grind. It also introduces...

    D&D 5E (2014) Help with Background balance

When creating a setting that has some big changes compared to the implied D&D setting, I would focus on describing the new backgrounds and how they fit into the setting rather than the mechanics. Let the players use the PHB rules for creating custom backgrounds. Then use the existing...

    D&D 5E (2014) Playing DnD online

Been using Slack for chat sessions and between session discussions. Slack is awesome. I'm currently running a mystery/investigation-heavy sandbox adventure and I love that I can upload files and save posts so the player's can have for reference. The chat features are great too. Also great to be...

D&D General Which do you prefer, character build or fixed growth?

Why not both? I would like more choice earlier on to flesh out a specific character concept. At the minimum, all classes shoudll choose their path at level 1 (with maybe an option to change or divert from that later on). But there also has to be choices as you level as well.

D&D General What tone do you prefer for D&D?

Absolutely this. I like the players to be heroes but I always err on the side of dark and creepy just under the surface...

    D&D 5E (2014) Beowulf 5E: The Hermit's Sanctuary Free Adventure

Just downloaded and taking a quick look. I already love the social "skill challenges" for NPCs! That is AWESOME.

    D&D 5E (2014) Need Help Brewing a Religious Bard

I'd even let a player swap out Cutting Words for a domain feature like the ones you mentioned.

    D&D 5E (2014) Need Help Brewing a Religious Bard

In lieu of a homebrew College, Lore bard lets you choose spells from any class. One level cleric also works great with bards! Life is great to go along with spells like Aura of Vitality and Knowldge if you want ALL THE SKILLS. Can even take the Acolyte background for more holy flava.

    D&D 5E (2014) Losing Interest in Character/ Class?

Really interesting - and surprising - to hear this! I feel completely the opposite, especially with regards to 3ed & 4ed. 3ed was ALL about the next carrot you were going to get and optimizing every choice. You also had to put in a decent amount of work to know what your options were. I would...

    D&D 5E (2014) Short Rest Spellpoints (+)

Wow very cool. I like spell points a lot. I wish the sorcerer used them by default. Just curious - why did you depart from the system in the DMG?

D&D General Let's talk about sandboxes, open worlds and hexcrawling

This! A thousand times this! This is how the sandbox comes to life. I would always err on the side too many hooks as opposed to not enough. Players will pick and choose and fill in the details on their own, which you can use to your advantage!

D&D General Let's talk about sandboxes, open worlds and hexcrawling

I love sandboxes. That said, my view of what a sandbox is - or at least what is fun - has changed over the years. Unless it's a video game, the traditional hexcrawl isn't fun. Players need hooks (and remember kids, create hooks, not plot). Hooks give player's choice, when then creates emotional...

D&D 5E (2014) Intiative Score (DMG variant rule)

Because of this thread (which you should read, it's good stuff!), I took a look at some of the variant rules in the DMG (also a must-read). Anyway, I haven't tinkered with Initiative variants very much. While the RAW system isn't perfect, I also haven't seen any variant system that offers...
