I disagree with you on setting guides, there is a reason why WotC appears to be doing more setting guides, they sell very well, the top type of book required in surveys were Campaign Setting books, and they have produced alot of APs, more then most folks can play thru right now, so slowing...

It deserves it because the Forgotten Realms has consistently delivered more then any other setting, even when 4e divided the Forgotten Realms fan base. There are a huge amount of FR fans who want a book like this.

Bashlash comes at new settings as well for a host of reasons, including ignoring existing IPs in favour of other settings, look at the backlash that doing Exandia and MtG settings has so far generated. Not every book has to be targeted to btw.

The SCAG is a regional book with a quick bare bones summary of what's going on elsewhere, it is not a setting book at all, but it's been pushed into the akward position of acting in the job of a setting book, because thin lore is better then no lore at all. I mean the whole of Faerun...
