My old group from university have a weeklong gaming splurge every two years, lots of fun. MInd you when we were studying we often had weekend-long sessions.

Prefer short simple backgrounds for characters myself, especially at low levels/ages. As a player I love letting the character develop personality over the first few sessions, as it generally surprises me and works out better than having something prewritten.
