    Setting Reboots are Good

I like what the FRCS did in terms of a reboot for Forgotten Realms in 3rd Edition. That's my baseline now: I ignore everything post-1372 DR and have written up my own rough outlines of the events of the years since then otherwise covered by novels.

Which version of D&D or D&D-like will you be playing by the end of 2008 ?

3.5E set in the pre-Spellplague Forgotten Realms and completely uninfluenced and unaffected by any novels published since the FRCS. I also really, really, really want to get a game of Savage Worlds going either set in FR or in Midnight.

    Cormyr, Shadowdale, Anauroch

For those of you who have run these, what did you use for a prequel adventure? I'm planning on running a modified Haunted Halls of Eveningstar, albeit with a more Keep on the Borderlands-feel. A portal will ultimately link Eveningstar with Wheloon so that the published adventures can begin...

One party member in serious trouble (Albert/Eddy/Maarten, STAY OUT!)

You could always just rule that the negative levels are temporary. That's how I prefer to play it: I've never liked level drains (or ability point drain: damage, yes).

    Cool/Interesting Descriptions of 4E Powers

It reminds me of trappings in Savage Worlds!

Picking up 4E as inspiration for 3.5E play?

That's pretty much what I plan to do, as well as using the simplified monster format to inspire a few Savage Worlds conversions. I think the changes to the fighter, ranger and rogue might inspire some changes in my 3.5E games. I'm not sure about the warlord yet: whether I should make it a...

    Midnight 2nd Edition

It's superb. I'm still waiting to run it: business has gotten in the way of a few games in the past few years. It includes the second book which, IIRC, was called Against the Shadow. It may have a couple of monsters in it too from Minions of Shadow but I'm not 100% sure. The thing that...

You don't like the new edition? Tell me about it!

    1. The game is incomplete in terms of what I want to use it for (in particular, I hate generic clerics). 2. I prefer DMing in FR (without any of the nonsense from the novels) and I really do not like the design decisions that have been revealed so far for FR4E. I might reconsider in a year or...

my thoughts on 4e MM art

I'm recalling pieces from various FR products. I don't have my books with me now but his versions of yuan-ti, in particular, were hideous. I'll try and find some specific examples.

    Bus Stop Weirdoes!

Thanks for reminding me why I'm sometimes so glad I live in Singapore. :)

    What's a good race/template for a shadow-shifting assassin?

IIRC, the shadow-walker template from FR's Unapproachable East grants some interesting powers including a chance that, when slain, the NPC simply discorporates and returns some other time. Not bad for a recurring villain.

my thoughts on 4e MM art

Bad art? Yes, perhaps... but nothing as bad as the rubbish produced during 3.xE by Dennis Crabapple/Cramer/McClain (the soft porn guy who kept changing his name) or Jeremy Jarvis. I'm glad to see those two off the list.

Now that 4e is upon us, what will you do?

I'm sticking with 3.5E but thinking about incorporating a few more house rules to change skills (inspired by SW Saga, Pathfinder and 4E) and boosting the number of feats. I've read through the 4E books and I don't really like what I see. It might prove to be OK (or even great) in play but it...

    A question about Castlemourn

I would still like to see the timeline that is mentioned in the book. The book states that MWP would be posting it on their website but that has yet to happen. It's noted on the forums at candlekeep.com that there is more stuff to come for the setting which I'm pleased about as I think it still...

    Dragonstar 4e

I don't think it was. FFG's other setting, Dawnforge, was definitely in the setting search but not Midnight, IIRC.

What should guard this bad guy's lair?

What about a living wall? The 3.5E version is in one of the final Creature Catalogue features in the print version of Dragon. The living wall could be comprised of various pirates and even aquatic humanoids. Perhaps the dominant "inhabitant" is a sea hag?

    antipathy

Maybe I am wrong but I would rule that "a creature with the blood of red dragons in its veins" would be allowed by me to exclude both red dragons and half-red dragons while also meeting the requirement of a specific kind of creature.

Are you bothering to read DUNGEON anymore? (and level index)

I have a particular hatred for the Dungeon Delve format as well. I mainly read Dungeon for adventure, plot, encounter and site ideas more than looking for complete adventures. The use of this new-ish format seems to take away the bits of fluff that I'm looking for (YMMV). The Expedition...

    D&D 3.x Epic Destinies for 3.5

These are great. This is what the Epic Level Handbook should have looked like (yes, Andy Collins, you may have the 4E books but we all remember that you were the lead designer of the ELH). These would also be perfect for a campaign run in Dawnforge.
