D&D 5E (2014) Blog of Holding Takes on Treasure Distribution and 1 XP/1 GP

I could totally see running, or playing, a game that was gold for XP. It establishes a campaign where you don't adventure for adventure's sake. You're not in it for power, excitement, or a good story. It's all about gold. Could be fun.

D&D 5E (2014) Does anybody else wish that WOTC would release paper pawns, similar to Paizo?

I wouldn't mind it, but I wouldn't buy them. I tend to prefer metal miniatures that I swear I'll get to painting someday. That said, if I could just buy sets of plastic miniatures without the random part, I'd probably collect the whole monster manual. But I'm likely enough of a minority that...

    D&D 5E (2014) Should player's assume if it's in the DMG then it's RAW?

I generally consider the DMG and the MM to be off limits to players by default. I don't really want them reading them unless they intend to run a game. But, it's not like that's enforceable. This DMG is pretty much entirely a toolkit. I don't consider anything in there to be part of the core...

D&D 5E (2014) Should Power Word spells be a bonus action?

The real question is, what should the word be, for role playing purposes.

D&D 5E (2014) Dungeons and Dragons: The "Dungeon Master's" edition.

There is some truth to this, in that the rolling surveys automatically create a selection bias. The developers have several times mentioned that they turnout for the surveys was greater than expected. My suspicion is that those of us with strong opinions on various aspects of the game were...

D&D 5E (2014) Dungeons and Dragons: The "Dungeon Master's" edition.

I agree that WotC did not entirely deliver the modularity that was promised, mostly because it turned out they didn't need to. They went in to the playtest expecting there to be a few large, highly different groups of D&D players. Over time they found that to be false. They were instead able to...

    D&D 5E (2014) Rarity and Creating Scrolls

Maybe, though the assumption would be that magic items, including scrolls, are given a rarity based on their ability. So a wonderous item would presumably have a less powerful effect than a single use scroll of the same rarity.

    D&D 5E (2014) Monster Manual 2 or Player's Handbook 2?

I do believe there is room for more player content, but that it isn't needed now. But I'm not opposed to eventually getting players option book that expands on feats, classes, subclasses, backgrounds, etc. And I already want a set of books on races at least as good as the 3.5 Races of Stone/The...

D&D 5E (2014) The DMG: Has it lived up to the hype?

It's a fantastic book, but it doesn't include as much modularity as I had been led to expect during the playtest process. I think some of that has been removed for online publication through a future article series, and I think the rest may have been dropped because there's less demand for it...

D&D 5E (2014) On the healing options in the 5e DMG

Shorter overall rests make everyone more powerful, and longer ones make everyone weaker, that's definitely true. The increased frequency of high level spells is particularly problematic, which is why they've mentioned a specific limit. What changes the balance of power between classes that favor...

D&D 5E (2014) On the healing options in the 5e DMG

What you've really pointed out is that every class has a mix of powers that recharge with short and long rests, and they all have abilities they can keep using. Because they all have them, adjusting the length of rests shouldn't significantly affect class balance. Note that for the super heroic...

D&D 5E (2014) Why are vague rules praised?

I don't think the defense of any individual vague rule comes from a desire for vague rules. Even when going rules light, rules should be clear, concise, and work as intended, though it's okay if they require some adjudication. The defense of a vague rule happens as a defense against...

D&D 5E (2014) What to do when Pc's die? What then for that player?

I have the player roll up a new character at the same level as the party. Losing a character is generally enough of a penalty by itself. In my current campaign, since 5E has proven to be fairly lethal, at least at low levels, I've recommended that players have a backup character ready. My only...

Additional Pages for the Official Sheets

I've updated the Character Portrait sheet to be a little more interesting and to have a spot for the character's name. I somewhat imagine this as a cover page for those who like that sort of thing.

Additional Pages for the Official Sheets

You're welcome. In all likelihood, I'll create fillable version at some point, but it's a lot of tedious effort, and very difficult to alter if I need to make changes to the design. Thus, I prefer to wait until my creations have gotten some use at the table and I've gotten some feedback.

    9bit's 5e Sheet Edit

I know this thread is a couple months old, but I just wanted to let you know that I like what you've done here. These make for a solid option for those who like the official sheets, but want a few concerns addressed.

Additional Pages for the Official Sheets

I have just uploaded Additional Pages for the Official Sheets to the downloads area. This is a collection of optional sheets intended to be used with the official sheets, built using the same style and assets. Each sheet is independent, so you can pick an choose which ones interest you. This...

D&D 5E (2014) Help! Getting My Group to Thundertree (Lost Mine of Phandelver)

I just finished running Lost Mine of Phandelver, and my players never went to Thundertree either. But, they have heard of it. So I'll come up with something for the location as the game continues. I like the Ravenholm concept. I might use that.

    D&D 5E (2014) I have the DMG!

Sure. By breaking bounded accuracy, I simply mean that it breaks the established bounds. And +6 does break them by enough to make me uncomfortable.

    D&D 5E (2014) I have the DMG!

I'm greatly looking forward to getting this book, and if I have any complaints, I'll hold off until I've had a chance to digest the content myself. I do want to address +3 shields breaking bounded accuracy. They do, but since the game math supposedly assumes no magical gear, all +X items break...
