    New Issue of Dragon+

Because people with Android or iOS devices are a subset of people with web browsers. So you start by building a web app, which has the broadest availability, then you build platform specific apps to enhance the experience where it makes sense. The app is free, the content is free, and neither...

D&D 5E (2014) Reflecting on advantage and disadvantage.

Sure, it's blunt, but blunt works well. Nuanced modifiers are rarely worth using. That said, as a DM, there's no reason you can't give a modifier for something, or adjust the DC.

D&D 5E (2014) Adventure Design: Backstory and History

That's an interesting point, and perhaps an encounter could have a couple useful subsections: What they know: The rat-men believe that all their orders come directly from Skeeg, and Skeeg likes it that way. But Skeeg takes his orders from the Hobgoblin warlord Mog. He meets with an agent of Mog...

    New Issue of Dragon+

Providing a phone app is a great idea. It just shouldn't have been their first target.

    New Issue of Dragon+

Not as broad as the market of people with web browsers. Going app-first seems unreasonably limiting to me. Especially for content that is ultimately HTML based. They're working on a web version, which is good. It's just frustrating that I can't read the content because my phone or tablet...

D&D 5E (2014) The Official Poll! What THREE things do you like most about D&D 5th Edition?

At the moment, the poll claims 612 people have voted, and 651 of them voted for Advantage/Disadvantage. I'm a little confused.

    D&D 5E (2014) Magic Initiate Feat Debate!

Two reasons. First, the concept of the feat is that you are dabbling in the basics of a class's spellcasting system, so the mechanics would naturally follow that. Second, feats are supposed to work for anyone who takes them, granting an ability if you don't have it, or augmenting it if you do...

    D&D 5E (2014) Magic Initiate Feat Debate!

It seems the rules as written state that the feat grants you one first level spell, which you can cast once per day. In addition, you can also use spell slots provided by your class to cast it. But you can't use that once-per-day casting to do anything else. I suspect the intention, though, is...

D&D 5E (2014) [Poll for the front page] Nominate your ONE favourite thing about D&D 5E

The proficiency bonus. Finally, attacks, saves, and skills use the same progression mechanic. They are all ability checks + proficiency

Here Come The PRESTIGE CLASSES! Plus Rune Magic!

I'm not fond of the idea of Prestige Classes returning. I don't feel that the granularity provided is worth the added complexity of a new subsystem. The Rune Master doesn't seem like a good candidate for a prestige class anyway. There's one core mechanic, the ability to use complex rune...

D&D 5E (2014) The use of Monster Stat Blocks in Adventures

I've built an InDesign template, and use that to create stat block index cards. They work as both a reference and a way to track initiative.

Urban Bounty Hunter from SCAG Courtesy of Extra Life

I like the background. Personally, I'd buy a book that was just hundreds of pages of backgrounds. I love the concept and flavor of them. I'm not specifically glad that aren't any new feats, but I'm very pleased that they didn't feel the need to create feats just to fill a book.

Here's That SCAG Table of Contents!

My suspicion is this: Early on, They were considering releasing an Adventurer's Guide for each storyline, or at least doing so fairly often. It was then determined that this would end up being too much content, so settled on creating one Adventurer's Guide for the sword coast, where they know...

Here's That SCAG Table of Contents!

At 160 pages, there is a lot less to this book than I was expecting. That's okay, as it appears to be player focused, but it leaves me hoping we get a deeper campaign setting book in the near future.

    D&D 5E (2014) Your best suggestion for a spellcaster's feat?

Just some vague ideas: Blood Magic - lets you perform any spell as a ritual by sacrificing a living creature. Higher level spells require more significant sacrifices. Calvary Mage - ability to sacrifice spell slots to remove levels of exhaustion from a mount - advantage on ranged spell attacks...

D&D 5E (2014) Survivor: Core Classes There Can Be Only 1.

Of course the bard won. It's a popularity contest, and the Bard is the best at manipulating people's votes.

Also: * Proficiency Bonus: Ability Checks, Saving Throws, Attacks, and skills are all calculated the same way now: Ability Score + proficiency bonus (if you're proficient in it). There are very few other modifiers in the game.
