And The Kobolds Dined Well... A Playtest Report

Great post! I hope to have one like it tomorrow after my group's playtest. It'll be from a player's POV, though granted a player who has already devoured the playtest packet.

    Earning Experience Points

Yeah, my best guess at this point is that we're operating under a 4e-like system where you get a monster's XP value for defeating it. There are definitely no guidelines yet, and I'm sure they're working on rules for quests and RP XP, but for now I'd go with monsters killed/beaten.

Strangely Missing/Atlered Aspects from the Playtest Docs

All the monsters have XP values in the Bestiary. My best guess is that it's a 4e-style award system where each monster defeated gives a set XP amount that's split evenly among the party.

Magical attacks - do they all require to-hit rolls?

I went through the exact same thought process and came to the same conclusion. Some spells use attack rolls, some don't; ditto saves. What's interesting is that as far as I can tell, all spell attack rolls use your "magic ability"-- usually Int or Wis-- even if they're explicitly making a ranged...

D&D 5E (2014) Playtesting D&D Next: Reapers, Cantrips, Turnings, Rests...

Derp! You are correct, sir. I of course meant DDXP.

D&D 5E (2014) Playtesting D&D Next: Reapers, Cantrips, Turnings, Rests...

Fair enough, sir, and sadly I won't know until you do. All I can say is that I have the same hopes you do. :)

D&D 5E (2014) Playtesting D&D Next: Reapers, Cantrips, Turnings, Rests...

Since the initial open playtest at PAX East, the playtest material has been the Caves of Chaos from KotB. Wizards has stated that the playtest released on the 24th will be the same basic packet-- pregens and the Caves of Chaos.

    Jonathan Tweet talks "13th Age"

Not gonna lie-- this sounds pretty cool to me.

Dave Arneson's Personal RPG Collection For Auction

Prediction: locked briefcase auctions for more than anything else in the collection, turns out to be empty.

    D&D 3.5 Reprints in September?

The "Provolone" link is now non-working. Looks like whatever the mistake was, B&N corrected it.

D&D 5E (2014) Monte Cook Leaves WotC - No Longer working on D&D Next [updated]

My concerns are now... 1. It'll take longer for 5e to be released, or for the playtest to be opened up; alternately, that the playtest won't happen at all. 2. That corporate concerns are overriding the attempt to simply design the best game possible. That happens all the time, of course, but...

Suggest Your "Rule of Three" Questions for Next Week (4/17)

You've given out a lot of mechanical tidbits about combat-- hints about how rogues, fighters, wizards, etc. will fight. What mechanical systems, if any, have you considered or tested for the exploration and interaction pillars of the game? For example, there's a current thread on ENWorld...

    Teach Me Your Old-School Ways

This is actually quite helpful. I should have seen this, but I didn't-- I'm too stuck in the new-school adventure style where everything is carefully plotted out and has tons of background. The Caves of Chaos aren't like that, but when I saw a list of rooms and monsters I just sort of thought...

    Teach Me Your Old-School Ways

I love this! I'm curious about this, the "make sure players know" part. I do see that you need to give the players information to make informed decisions, but aren't you showing your hand a bit here? Also, won't players sort of work this stuff out for themselves as they play? Like, I don't...

    DM or GM?

How has nobody mentioned the fact that one of the core rulebooks has always been called the Dungeon Master's Guide since 1979? Are we to be referring to the 5th edition "GMG?" Pfah.

    The Rogue and Sneak Attacking

Whatever direction they go, I hope it isn't totally dependent on flanking or some other battle-grid condition. If you're playing without a battle mat (as 5e is supposed to support) then powers that require flanking (or opportunity attacks, etc.) become basically useless. I think what defined...

    Teach Me Your Old-School Ways

Do you have one consistent group that you always play with, or does your table change from game to game? I certainly think your way would work if you had the same players each time. How do you handle new players, people who can't make a session, etc.?

    Teach Me Your Old-School Ways

Awesome, that makes a lot of sense! So here's a question that has been addressed a little, but not a lot. Since tracking time and movement very specifically is such an important part of the playstyle, how do people do it? One poster mentioned using a pencil point on the DM's map for party...

    Teach Me Your Old-School Ways

So the 1e AD&D wilderness tables assumed that you wouldn't just go wandering around the wilderness until you reached a certain level? Interesting. I suppose that fits the dictum that early-level play is contained to a fairly small area, so there would be no need to go wandering about looking for...
