What Player Abilities Should the Game Encourage?

I agree with you in theory, but I think for some of the aspects wrecan outlined, the system can take control away from the DM. Optimization is the clear example. Compare 1e with its randomly rolled stats to 4e with its tactical combat focus. Optimization is far more of a focus in 4e, going so...

    Kill the skinny halfling!

When was the last time we saw the word "Hin" in print? I've been playing for twenty years and I've never heard it.

    April 3rd, Rule of 3

Still pretty darn excited about the whole adventure-focus-not-encounter-focus thing. He hit the right notes (for me) with the bit about making exploration more meaningful.

    Teach Me Your Old-School Ways

Thanks for the links and suggestions. Who is/was this Judge's Guild? I've heard the name but I don't quite grok their relationship to TSR. Why is their stuff so much better? And where might I be able to find it? EDIT: Oh, at the link you provided. Thanks!

    Teach Me Your Old-School Ways

So wilderness random encounters tend to be heavy-duty, not just wandering monsters but something that can really tell you about the environment or define an area. That is VERY interesting. So how do you handle rolling 300 orcs or 4 red dragons when your players are level 1? I suppose for 300...

    Teach Me Your Old-School Ways

So movement is measured in inches, which maps to a 1" = 10' scale? I'm asking because I actually got my hands on a copy of the 1979 DMG (in fairly terrible condition, but none of the pages are missing/unreadable so I'm happy with it) and it says in a couple of places "Movement is discussed...

    Teach Me Your Old-School Ways

Sounds like movement rates, at least, haven't changed over the editions. That's pretty cool, actually. I like those probabilities about encounters per day. I tried to put together my own random encounter tables just based on what seemed right, and they ended up a bit too common, with something...

Dragon’s-Eye View 3/28/2012... now with ENW poll!

That's a fair point, but JS's post is about realism and styles of armor, not depictions of women. And the armor of the manga and FR examples is basically the same. I just think the cartoon missed the mark, is all. The rest of the post illustrations were coo and useful, especially the awesome...

Dragon’s-Eye View 3/28/2012... now with ENW poll!

I was being a bit off-the-cuff, but honestly, look at those two examples. They both have high boots with stilletto heels, V-shaped waistpieces that reveal the entire upper thigh, chestpieces that cover the breasts and curve down along the ribs but leave the midriff exposed, armbands for the...

Dragon’s-Eye View 3/28/2012... now with ENW poll!

Does anybody else think the "manga" and "fantastic realism" examples look identical except for the eyes and horns? The "photorealism" example is the only one I like at all.

    Teach Me Your Old-School Ways

Is that 30 minutes of table time or 30 minutes of in-game time? If the latter, how do you track in-game time? This is interesting, and not what I would have expected. What's the reasoning behind this? (By the way, I clearly need to get copies of the old 1e books since they seem to be full of...

    Teach Me Your Old-School Ways

So this starts to get into the question of monster tactics. Would you be willing to shed some light on your decision-making process for how smart you have monsters act, and how wise they are to the PCs' methods? Your ambush example is a good one, since there are a few decisions you need to make...

    Teach Me Your Old-School Ways

Here's a specific question for you wonderful people to chew over. What does the workday of an old-school dungeoncrawl look like? If you're exploring for the sake of exploring, which is what gets my motor running about this old-school thing, then there isn't a clear goal you're working towards...

    Teach Me Your Old-School Ways

Dear Grognards, How do you play old school? I understand the elements of the style, but I don't really know where to start in practically DMing in an old-school way. For example... *How do I make a dungeon more than just a bunch of fights? I was reading through Keep on the Borderlands the...

The Ranger: to Spell or not to Spell

I like what I'm hearing about the ranger not really being necessary, that it should just be a Woodsy theme added to a fighter or rogue or anyone. But I think that if ranger is its own class, which I'm sure it will be, it should have spells for the simple reason that if it doesn't, it may as well...

    Understudy classes (for NPCs)

I love NPC classes, but I don't think every PC class needs its own knock-off NPC version. I'd rather see something like the 3e NPC classes where I can make some basic NPCs with a few different templates. I don't think I would need to choose between an Archer and a Warrior for each town...

    Multipliers in addition to... addition.

Agreed that they're too much work. You'd be dealing with huge numbers very quickly, which would make flatter math hard to achieve. Also, 3e drove me nuts with its rule that multipliers "added"-- if you had two separate x2's to a number, that made x3, not x4. I understand why they did it, but I...

Weapons: What Are They Good For?

I like this idea for two reasons. One, in 3e and 4e at least, there's a huge list of weapons, of which most are pointless because they're objectively worse than something else. I'd like to see either fewer weapons or meaningful distinctions between 'em. Two, it would synergize with another...

    Death is Final

I don't usually want death to be final final, so there should at least be guidance on how to avoid those rip-up-your-character-sheet-and-sit-the-rest-of-the-night-out moments. I do hope that they flatten the power curve so bringing a 1st-level new character in, which has always been what I do if...

    Dear WotC: Be Blizzard

Well said all around. As an impatient person my instinct is just GIMME GIMME GIMME but I do believe I shall show some maturity and restraint and agree with the OP. Give it the time it needs. I think it's heartening that WotC hasn't announced any official dates for anything.
