    D&D 5E (2014) The Flumph!

The stats for flumphs have always fallen short of the legend. Some say the flumphs are hiding their true power. :D (I think they've pretty much always had 2d8 hit points and fairly low-damage attacks, but my 1e Fiend Folio is boxed up in preparation for a move, so I can't verify that right now.)

Would a typical D&D town allow adventurers to walk around?

This is an area where I like to take inspiration from Westerns (or samurai movies, if you prefer :)). When somebody who is dangerous, and famous for being dangerous, comes to town, some of the locals will hide, some will try to ingratiate themselves, and maybe a reckless individual or two will...

D&D 5E (2014) IMHO level progression is too fast

E6, from this very forum? There's also a blog post by Justin Alexander on extending the idea -- E(X).

D&D 5E (2014) Mearls Interviews: Hints at the new model

I'm jumping into the middle of a discussion here, but the earliest things I'm aware of that I'd consider splatbooks were for Traveller. Starting with "Book 4: Mercenary" in 1978, GDW put out a series of volumes that each expanded the character-creation options for one type of character...

    D&D 5E (2014) The Flumph!

The flumphs are back, hooray! From squinting at the text, it looks like they have a definite and unique adventure hook, too. Now flumphs live on mental energy siphoned off from psionic monsters, and pick up some thoughts and emotions as a side effect -- which means that they can tell you what...

    D&D 5E (2014) Any DMs ever use Tact-Tiles?

Hexes are one of the stretch goals for the Kickstarter -- if they reach $200K. Right now they're at about $66K with 11 days to go. Personally, I have a mild case of Tact-Tiles envy, but they just won't fit into my budget. That Paizo Flip-Mat is less versatile than a set of Tact-Tiles, but it's...

D&D 5E (2014) Why is the "Dungeons & Dragons" label so discreet in 5E?

I think it's more that the game has become so iconic that everybody recognizes "D&D" without needing to have it spelled out.

    Worth having?

    If you say so. ;)

How could the Tarrasque still possibly be alive?

Yeah, the idea of the Tarrasque is that it's extremely difficult to kill it, and even harder to keep it from getting better afterward. This works better/is easier to pull off in settings with less powerful magic in the hands of the good guys than in ones in which epic-level wizards are all...

Pathfinder 1E What's this, then, Paizo? ANOTHER video game? By Obsidian?

I'm not going to call Fallout 3 or New Vegas better than the other, but I never ran into a game-breaking bug in either and have put much more time into Fallout 3. In general, Bethesda's strength is in building sandboxes and Obsidian's is in narrative. In specific, NV unquestionably has the...

    D&D 5E (2014) Monster Manual First Spoiler!

That attack always seemed suspiciously similar to a delayed blast fireball to me. But from now on, I shall forever think of it as the Cough Drop of Doom.

Advanced Dungeons & Dragons and the original Basic D&D - your experiences?

IMHO, giving a clear idea of the different kinds of things characters of increasing levels do was one of the things BECMI did best. Expanding the scope of adventures has always felt more satisfying to me than creating ever-tougher dungeons.

D&D 5E (2014) Wizards Banned from Armor (Your Fluff Wanted)

Or just forbid them from casting in armor. Or apply the same penalties for casting in armor to them as to anyone else.

    Merchant class (GAZ11)

Dragon #136, pp. 22-26. Written for 1e AD&D and intended for NPCs only, but I understand people seeing the latest "NPC class" and begging to play one was a cliche of the era. (If anybody reading this didn't already know about the DragonDex, it's a complete index to every Dragon Magazine article...

    Looking for specific magical swords

The "Swords of Answering"/"Final Word" swords from 1e's Unearthed Arcana? Sword, Broad, “Final Word” Type is a very rare item -only nine of these blades are known to exist. Each is patterned after the legendary broadsword Fragarach (which means “final word” in the tongue of the ancient...

    D&D 5E (2014) The Real Question About 5th Edition

The very first strip is about switching from 3.0 to 3.5. Belkar is excited about the change and hoping for more skill points, and instead his weapon shrinks.

Where did you first buy your D&D stuff?

I grew up in a rural area, and my Mentzer Basic and Expert boxed sets came from a toy store in the nearest shopping mall, which was about a half-hour's drive from home. I got my Rules Compendium, first AD&D stuff, and occasional Dragon from bookstores in that mall. That phase would be the late...

Sometimes I feel like I'm the only one who doesn't care about numbers...

It seems to me that number-crunching rules analysis and character optimization are sub-hobbies under the umbrella of gaming, just like the worldbuilding and improv-ish acting that I'm more into. All the sub-hobbies are valid, but they appeal to people differently, and each forum draws its own...

Pathfinder 1E Orcs and their available arsenal

I could totally see orcs lagging behind the other races in metallurgy. Maybe orcish champions can be recognized by the armor and weapons they took as trophies from more "advanced" enemies and now use, or maybe the strongest orcs scorn better tools and proudly wield even more primitive equipment...
