And in 4e, Banjo will be a major deity. ;)

Dragon & Dungeon Magazines - the numbers tell the story

Or even "cause." I find it pleasingly strange that when it's used as a verb, "effect" becomes synonymous with "cause".

Dragon & Dungeon Magazines - the numbers tell the story

Sounds like WotC expected more people to mail in the Dungeon and Dragon subscription cards from the backs of the 3e core books than actually did.

Ryan Dancey to self-publish tabletop RPG

Weird. I think of Dancey as a business guy, not a game designer -- though I can sort of see how getting "cooperative storytelling" into D20 fits with the "one system to rule them all" vision of D20.

    Gaming and Jury Duty Discrimination?

I feel kind of left out whenever people tell jury-duty stories. I've only been called up for jury duty twice so far, and both times, it was for county courts in counties I hadn't lived in in over a year. I'd updated my voting regstration and in one case even gotten a driver's license from a...

What actually occured between TSR and Role Aids?

In case anyone has been meaning to check this out but hasn't gotten around to it yet, they're sold out of the "Worlds and Wonders Set" and "Demons Set", but the "Source and Background Set" and adventures are still available.

    Having a lower-than-average INT moment...

And if you're feeling extra-picky and have some time on your hands, RPG Sheets has lots of alternatives to choose from.

No Love for the Dragon Turtle?

1e dragon turtles were the nastiest dragons; they had 12-14 HD and did 2-12/2-12/4-32 claw/claw/bite, compared to 10-12 HD and did 1-8/18/6-36 for gold dragons.

    Boxed Sets

It's easier to fit goodies into a boxed set -- poster-sized maps, separate booklets for players and GM's, dice, player handouts, whatnot. There's also a nostalgia factor. I started out with the red-box Basic Set, so opening a boxed set brings back some of the excitement from when it was all...

    Source for 2nd Edition Spells

Oxen Strength is in Dragon #138. I can't find Rockburst in the Dragon archive.

    What should the Realms Lose?

I don't think there's a way to fix that problem while keeping the Realms as a setting for novels as well as games. Published fiction has to have protagonists, but the existence of NPC protagonists is a problem for a game setting.

    Edith Hamilton on D&D Settings

I like "points of light" as a campaign beginning, but want PC's to expand those little lights over the course of a campaign. Which is very Greek -- PC's who wander around ridding the land of monsters and tyrants are following in the footsteps of Heracles and Theseus.

[HELP] Looking for a piece of classic art.

And lots of others. Thanks to this thread, I'm seriously tempted to get lots of Elmore prints that I can't afford. (Someday, I'l have a real job, and live in a place with room for a gaming area. When that happens, I want that area to be decorated with the art from the Basic, Expert, and...

    Mac Users Identify Yourselves!

There are a lot of ways it could be better, but overall, I've been enjoying it. I'm playing the Windows version because I already had a Boot Camp install and decided I'd rather pay $30 this summer than wait to pay $50 for the Mac port. I'd suggest waiting for the price to come down, maybe even...

How do fans of OTHER RPGs handle new editions?

There's always some folks who wholeheartedly embrace the new edition of their favorite old game, some who are so comfortable with the current version that they feel betrayed by change, and lots in between. The really polarizing changes are ones that discourage updating an ongoing campaign to...

D&D 4E 4E: What we think we know

It's the grand cycle of (A)D&D -- every new edition is streamlined, at first. My 2e PHB had a paragraph explaining that one of the reasons for the 2nd edition was that 1e had gotten too bloated with over a dozen books, but between the time that paragraph was written and the printing I bought...

Elucidating Alignment - Part I: Law and Chaos

Yeah, that's what I'd say too, but I don't think everyone who's posted in this thread would agree. Personally, I weight the external part more heavily, but that's just my take on a rather vexed issue.

Elucidating Alignment - Part I: Law and Chaos

It seems to me that the problem with the Law-Chaos axis is that it involves both internal and external aspects that aren't necessarily connected. That is, living by a consistent set of principles is Lawful, and respecting authority is Lawful, but what do you call someone who lives by a...

    [D&D history/development] I wonder why...

Interesting -- that chart has good liches as well as evil. Vampires are solidly LE on it, but by the 1E MM they were CE, and they've stayed that way since. Meanwhile, orcs were CE in 1976, then spent the 1e and 2e days as LE, before returning to chaos in 2000. Lots of little changes.
