D&D 4E 4e, minis... and some of my thoughts

Aw, good point. I hadn't thought of that, before, but it seems really likely to be the case. No argument here. But I think, for the purposes of this thread, those things count as miniatures. Imaro's talking about the rules requiring a grid with some kind of movable representation of the...

New core races or canon half races?

I really think it could work pretty simply and elegantly, though. After all, there aren't a whole lot of mechanical differences between the 3.5 core half-races and humans, anyway. So consider these: Elven Blood Prerequisites: First level, humanoid race other than elf. Benefits: Immunity to...

    Warden

I don't mind Warden, but it shares some of Warlord's "too similar to Warlock" problem.

How do Shifters and Changelings fit in Eberron?

    That was beautiful.

How do Shifters and Changelings fit in Eberron?

Yeah, I saw your post in the WotC forums thread you linked, and you're definitely getting me to rethink the Changeling. (Looking them up, though, they really get screwed over in the racial feats department, compared to the other Eberron races. But that Warshaper access might make up for it.)

    What's wrong with Mini-Centric?

That's kinda like saying "How much J-pop can you listen to and still be Canadian?" Miniatures are used in wargames, and wargames are not RPGs. However, it is not the use of minitaures that keeps wargames from being RPGs. There are ways around that.

    What's wrong with Mini-Centric?

Even if you wouldn't, it's still worth drawing a distinction since one can certainly run combat without miniatures. You can't reasonably talk about miniature use and combat as if they were interchangeable activities.

    Feeling Lost?

Oh, wow. That's just hilarious. Oh, Gary... I think I'll check it out, though, if only for the sake of new Gygax monsters.

    What's wrong with Mini-Centric?

The expense of miniatures isn't really an issue for me, since I just print up cheap-ass little paper markers and draw (or print) my own maps on 1-inch graph paper. However, having to shove aside everybody's books, character sheets, dice, and possibly food to make room for maps and minis is kind...

POLL: Would you play D&D without a Skill System?

I dunno. There are some "skills" that just seem inappropriate to actually spend points on. If a player wants his character to be a gemcutter, I don't think I'd ever tell him to buy ranks of Profession: gemcutter. It's probably never gonna come up in the game, and if it does, if won't be...

How do Shifters and Changelings fit in Eberron?

Of the Eberron races, it's the Changeling and Kalashtar that I can't really get into. Changelings seem like one-trick ponies, to me. How many character concepts can you build around the concept of disguise? (Unless maybe there are some feats out there that let them use their shapeshifting...

    A mystery race ?

I think that comparison's a little off. Luke's point wasn't about characters being played as stereotypical members of their own races, but as the animals their races resemble. If Sheer Khan chases dire rats, he's not being played as a stereotypical tiger man, but as a goofy cartoon cat. He'll...

    D&D haters???

Is it just me, or is this thread a magnet for all the bad spelling on the forum?

    A mystery race ?

That is completely badass. That's a hell of a lot more interesting than D&D's usual bit of just throwing in some dinosaurs, too. Pleistocene mammals are extremely cool. Nice. I like that angle a lot. Then all kinds of magical stuff can be attributed to (or billed as coming from) Eladri...

    D&D 4E The 4E Magic System

That's exactly what I'm saying, yeah. Those "25th level spells" we've heard about might not actually appear on spell lists. It might only mean that now a 25th-level Wizard can choose to cast magic missile as a 25th level spell.

    So...this is the new Ettercap?:(

Man, a lot of these minis just look like hell. I don't use miniatures, and I've never even owned any pre-painted minis, so maybe this is par for the course. They're not really meant to be scrutinized at five times their actual size, after all. I've never particularly cared about ettercaps one...

    A mystery race ?

What, insects aren't animals, now? I think what you mean is each class of vertebrate, which would generally mean mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fish. "Kingdom" is a larger classification, like animals, plants, fungi, etc. (Sorry for the pedantic tangent. I couldn't help myself.)

    Monster Subtypes

Damn, you beat me to the Aberration-as-Shape theory. Good guesses on the Metabolism list, too. I don't think I can add anything to that.

What would your next campaign be?

I've got GM ADD, so I've generally got at least three potential campaigns in mind at any given moment. Lately, I really want to run a Spirit of the Century game, but not in the default setting. Still a pulp setting, definitely, but with more scifi/paranormal/conspiracy themes, and maybe set in...
