    Warlock?

Yeah. Dark flavor is all fine and good, but it's something that should be specific to individual characters. Building themes, worldview, lifestyle, and personality into a character class is annoying and dumb. I strongly agree with this sentiment. I'd love to see fluff options or actual talent...

    D&D 4E Women in 4E

Things are definitely better (in RPGs in general and D&D in particular) than they used to be. They could also definitely be better than they are. I think that the characters portrayed in RPG art should be awesome, interesting, and inspiring. That doesn't always mean pretty, though. Not by a...

Classes discarded in PH1 will become talent trees or will remain separated entities?

Yeah, this isn't really a big surprise. I'd much rather see a slew of new talent trees in upcoming PHBs instead of more classes--it'd obviously be more flexible, and probably more efficient--but it doesn't seem likely that they'd dare go all True20 on us like that. D&D players will abuse the...

    Dragon Dungeon Little Nitpick. :)

Exactly. PDFs use loads of compression (often zip comression, even) in the first place, so there's really no point in zipping them. Worse, I seem to recall that a lot of the zip files hosted on wizards.com are actually larger than the PDFs they contain.

    Why all the fiendish love?

Why would you assume that tiefling PCs are going to be evil? They're "monsters" in that they look less human-like than the other non-human PC races. To assume that they, as individuals, are as evil as their fiendish ancestors is kind of ridiculous. And to say the same thing about...

Can WotC really set "Core" to what they want?

I don't think you really need to have a pseudo-Asia to use "Eastern" classes in a campaign setting, any more than 3e's iconic Paladin looks like one of Charlemagne's knights. But, more importantly, I suspect the whole "everything that exists in D&D exists in Eberron" line never really meant...

    WotC Blogs II

I am seriously wondering what the hell emo means to people, these days. To me, it's the obnoxious, my girlfriend-left-me-and-I'm-a-clinical-depressive wuss-rock stuff that would find its way onto the punk compilation CDs I used to buy, forcing me to hit fast forward every few songs. It ain't...

    Critical Hit with Fireball!

Hell, it never made much sense that shambling mounds were immune to crits, anyway. The monster's description explicitly says the damned things have brains in their upper bodies. That sure sounds like a stabbable vital organ, whether or not it belongs to a plant. Of course, a crit with a...

[Rampant Speculation] The First New "Power Sources"

I think we can all agree that Psionic is the most inevitable post-PH1 power source. Nature (or something like that) seems extremely likely, too, unless it turns out that the Druid is in the PH1 as a divine controller, as some have theorized. Fey is a really interesting idea for a power source...

    Roles, Power Sources; unbalanced?

I don't think that's the case. CoH's archetypes are very much artificial groupings of various character abilities. There are no technical limitations preventing them from eliminating archetypes and just letting each player choose level-appropriate powers from a huge, undivided list. I think...

    Warlock confirmed in PH1...

You know, I think you've probably nailed it.

    Roles, Power Sources; unbalanced?

I suspect we might be making too big a deal out of the whole "role" thing. It wouldn't be unreasonable to propose that the 4e classes will be just as adaptable to different roles through feats, equipment, and smart play as their 3e equivalents. The emphasis on roles may turn out to be more of...

    Will you subscribe to DDI?

Doubtful. I think it's a great idea, and I'm really looking forward to giving it a chance, but a monthly fee is a damned tough pill for me to swallow. I cancelled my MMORPG subscriptions a while ago. In order for me to subscribe beyond a quick trial period, I think I'd have to end up playing...

Is the Warlock going to kill the sorcerer and take his stuff?

Whoa, was that an Almost Live! reference?

    How to describe a race?

Jesus, yes. I don't see how elves and orcs are so far from humans in the first place that we would ever need a half-way point.

    WotC Blogs II

Yeah, and I cannot even express how much that design ethic bothers me. I'm really hoping 4e's character options are free of deliberate newb traps and penalty prerequisites.

D&D 4E AC exists in 4e... but do Reflex Saves?

I am strongly hoping that 4e uses Reflex Defense for regular combat, and 4e "Armor Class" is just Damage Resistance with a dead sacred cow's name slapped on it.

    Warlock confirmed in PH1...

This is a bit off-topic, but this thread reminds me how well 4e's roles map to the PC "archetypes" (classes) in City of Heroes. That MMORPG has controllers, defenders, blasters, scrappers, and tankers. Blasters and scrappers are both strikers. But CoH's tankers are D&D's defenders, while...

    Double Weapons: Scrap or keep?

Ironically, the monk's spade is a double weapon (at least in theory; I don't know how they were actually wielded). I think examples like that--along with the quarterstaff and, as ehren37 pointed out, the lajatang--suggest that the concept of the double weapon isn't inherently ridiculous. I'd...
