Even the wimpy elementals are useful, particularly earth. If you can speak Terran, they can do nifty things like enter enclosed spaces and retrieve items, etc..

I put mine on my my website before character creation begins. If I have a group that doesn't use the web much, I'll print them out for our CC session. If things change, I update them online. Having tried it this way, I can't imagine doing it any other way!

In our game, staff weapons do 6d6 -- an amount that somewhat changes the equation you mentioned above.

Our GM actually bought each of us one of those patches shortly after we started the game -- he rocks. :) I don't know what site they came from, but it was full of other SG gear (like patches for the other team numbers, etc.).
