D&D General I'm a Fighter, not a Lover: Why the 1e Fighter was so Awesome

Lareth was just an example. My point was that it was claimed the cleric as no protection and that's not true. So again, I'll point out how they can wear any armor and shield. Not dependent on magic items. And you usually got plate and shield by level 3. That's a lot of protection right there.

No, they aren't really common. Just look at rings. You've only got a 4% chance of getting a ring, then a 15% chance of having it a protection ring, then a 15% chance of getting anything better than a +2*. The chances are extremely small. Bracers aren't any better (2%, then 19% of that 2%, then...

D&D General I'm a Fighter, not a Lover: Why the 1e Fighter was so Awesome

That's the point I was trying to make. No protection? Clerics have plenty of protection.

No protection? They can wear the best armor in the game. I'd posit a single cleric wrecked havoc on PCs across the decades and countries---Lareth the Beautiful ;) He's responsible for at least 1 TPK in games that've I've run over the years. They are pretty good at being up front.

D&D General I'm a Fighter, not a Lover: Why the 1e Fighter was so Awesome

clerics were great in 1e. Especially with a decent wisdom and the bonus spell slots you got from that. And not just healbot. Spells like silence and hold person were very powerful spells in 1e.

This is awkward. Raises hand.... (Well, technically Combat lifesaver (combat medic lite), but was a UH-60 crewchief on plenty of medivac missions with combat medics). There are plenty of people who want to do that job, because you're helping your friends and buddies, possibly saving their...

OSR What's more important for a retroclone?

It's interesting how almost every comment is about option 1, but the votes are now leading option 2

OSR What's more important for a retroclone?

What do you think is more important to a retroclone of TSR era D&D? 1. Rules the mechanics and rules should stick without new changes. THAC0, races, classes, level limits, spells, etc. Think OSE or OSRIC but without the ascending AC options 2. The feel of the game Shadowdark is a good example...

D&D General I'm a Fighter, not a Lover: Why the 1e Fighter was so Awesome

That's how it is my current game. The assassin is a "fighter" wink wink. In character, no one knows he's an assassin. he has a 16 STR which helps sell the falsehood. And says he prefers the maneuverability that only light armor provides.

D&D General I'm a Fighter, not a Lover: Why the 1e Fighter was so Awesome

No, I meant how they were handled and how it went down. Let's create this one monster to get a players! Now that we did this one monster, let's add this field to every stat block even though it's pretty much NIL for everything Let's create new mechanics of a crazy system, but put it in the back...

D&D General I'm a Fighter, not a Lover: Why the 1e Fighter was so Awesome

The whole thing was dumb. Psionics were created for the mind flayer as a way to get at players (that's why it's in the MM, along with the few other creatures that have it--appeared first in Dragon with the Mind Flayer). It was only included in the PHB when Tim Kask convinced Gary that it's not...

D&D General I'm a Fighter, not a Lover: Why the 1e Fighter was so Awesome

The current game I'm in I talked about? The DM is in her late 20s. So they still exist and aren't just all old grogs.

D&D General I'm a Fighter, not a Lover: Why the 1e Fighter was so Awesome

I think it absolutely does, because as you immediately say: Which goes to my point: "We ignore all the rules that favored the fighter, then complain how the fighter sucks." To me, that's disingenuous to then try to complain how the game is not balanced, or the game is to blame for the fighter...

What Game Publishers Are Saying About The Tariffs

Even if they print in the US, the US still imports most of that raw material (ink, paper), so yeah. On top of higher labor costs.

Funny enough, the current 1e game I'm in is completely RAW and uses all of that. I even created a thread about it here ;)

D&D General I'm a Fighter, not a Lover: Why the 1e Fighter was so Awesome

I don't think it's being lost by folks. Heck, we even mentioned this several times in the thread re: houserules. The reason we (I) are talking in the context of RAW is because that's the baseline. Basically, at least for me, it's, "We ignore or houserule all these things that favored the...

D&D General Take A Look At The Class Boards From The New D&D Starter Set

Heh. More than a decade ago I cut out everything but the cards. Books, sheets, boards, adventures, etc. All gone. Just an RPG using a couple dice and cards only.

AD&D 1E What was so bad about unearthed arcana 1e?

The illusionist was underpowered, but the druid was one of the best at lower levels. People forget that you got your 2nd level spells at 2nd level, and 3rd level spells at 3rd level, and 4th level spells at 6th level--all much earlier than other casters. A 3rd level druid with call lightning is...
