TSR Why would anyone WANT to play 1e?

Well, Occam's razor says I'm an idiot. That's the best answer. The alternative is, "listen to what I mean, not what I said." :P Man, I let myself get mixed up with double negatives.

TSR Why would anyone WANT to play 1e?

OK folks, that thread I posted to in the OP? That's the thread about why would anyone want to play 1e. This one is about why would anyone NOT want to play it. If you want to post why you wouldn't, the original thread is perfect for that. Thanks :)

TSR Why would anyone WANT to play 1e?

Sure. See my other thread I linked to in the OP 😉

TSR Why would anyone WANT to play 1e?

I shall point you to the initiative rules in 1e. ;)

TSR Why would anyone WANT to play 1e?

I guess what I'm getting at is I see a lot of people cite how 1e was written or the 1e rules as to reasons why they would never want to play it, and I'm saying don't let that stop you, just make up your own or ignore them, because that's what we all did. The biggest benefit for something like...

TSR Why would anyone WANT to play 1e?

A couple months ago I posted a thread about why would anyone want to play RAW 1e, and gave reasons. As a follow up to that, and after several more sessions and talking with friends about OD&D, I realized why I loved 1e, and still do. Hint: It's to NOT play it RAW. A little context: We were...

    D&D General 6E But A + Thread

Pretty common in 1e at least. Just go skim through those modules. Magic items were everywhere. By design, because they were used as a way to keep fighters and other mundane classes up to power with casters after name level.

Can we have (-) only threads now?

Yeah, that's my question too. + threads are "let's talk about 4e, but only things you like about it." That has value, because fans can talk without people coming in to pee in their cheerios. Would a - thread be "let's talk about 4e, but only comments about how much you hate it are allowed."...

Dungeons & Dragons Releases New Unearthed Arcana Subclasses, Strongly Hinting at Dark Sun

I'm more disappointed in the HP remake because it means more money to you know who (pun intended).

Dungeons & Dragons Releases New Unearthed Arcana Subclasses, Strongly Hinting at Dark Sun

On a related note, I've heard a couple times about remaking Peter Jackson's LOTR movies, and the overwhelming response is "No way! It's way too soon! They couldn't do it better!" Then I realize that Hollywood does remakes every 20 years or so all the time, and guess how old the LOTR movies...

Dungeons & Dragons Releases New Unearthed Arcana Subclasses, Strongly Hinting at Dark Sun

I agree with this, and if I may, I want to expand on an analogy not just directed at you, but several posts I've seen re: "remakes ruin it for me." or "remakes take my nostalgia from me." Let's look at John Carpenter's The Thing (1981). It's one of the best horror movies ever made. I have a ton...

Dungeons & Dragons Releases New Unearthed Arcana Subclasses, Strongly Hinting at Dark Sun

I'm not trying to be flippant, but that still doesn't answer my question. What does that take away from you?

Dungeons & Dragons Releases New Unearthed Arcana Subclasses, Strongly Hinting at Dark Sun

Help me understand, because I feel like I'm missing something. How does refining Dark Sun take away anything from you? I'm an old school fan, started in '81, and I've never felt that something was taken away from me when it changed down the road. If something went a direction I didn't really...

Dungeons & Dragons Releases New Unearthed Arcana Subclasses, Strongly Hinting at Dark Sun

I was hoping there would be a Jazst subclass if they are doing Dark Sun.

Last week, the Level 14-16 party beat Graz'zt, 2 Marilith and a Storm Giant...easily

I think you've both hit on important parts of high level play. Obviously enough people have complained about high level play that there's an issue--I'm not going to gaslight a lot of players by saying there isn't. That said, there are important things about high level play the DM needs to...

TSR Why would anyone want to play 1e?

Shrug. I guess our philosophy was "if you're a MU is in melee at level 1, you're screwed anyway so might as well have something useful for the majority of time." And magic weapons went to the folks expected to be in melee. so the MU never got them anyway.

TSR Why would anyone want to play 1e?

I think low level MUs are underrated, and you kinda hint at why. They did have the same THAC0 as a fighter at level 1 and 2. And they could use a staff or dart as weapons. So even with 1d4 HP and no armor, if you're in the rear you're still contributing nearly as much as everyone else in combat...

OSR OSR-inspired video game, The Secret of Weepstone, has a trailer

Dragon magazine #39 introduced a critical hit table, so lot of us did have them in 1e. That's the second time today on this forum I've referenced Dragon #39 for completely different reasons. Weird.

TSR Why would anyone want to play 1e?

And I'd say UA was just an evolution of what we were already seeing with Dragon Magazine. All of those NPC classes? Everyone just used them as PC classes. So even before UA, we saw stuff like the anti-paladin in 1980. Which makes sense, seeing as how UA was largely just a compilation of DRAGON...
