    D&D 5E (2014) Why sleeping shouldn't be a long rest

I have run 5E in various formats... long sessions, short sessions, online... In my experience, I find Gritty Realism is the best option if you are running shorter sessions. I think messing with the spell economy in this way is a good thing. It helps make martial classes more powerful relative...

    D&D General Background Vs. Backstory

I want the actual game to be the most exciting thing that has ever happened to my character. So, backgrounds for my characters are usually short and boring.

D&D General No Fixed Location -- dynamically rearranging items, monsters, and other game elements in the interests of storytelling

To me this is the crux of the matter. As a player, how much do you care about the answer to this question? Some players don't care. As long as it is fun and they're having a good time, certainty of DM intervention is irrelevant. It doesn't get in the way of their fun and in fact it probably...

D&D General No Fixed Location -- dynamically rearranging items, monsters, and other game elements in the interests of storytelling

Fair points. I'll run things off the cuff based on player actions. But I just rather wait until after the session to change the environment. I believe the dungeon design ends when you run it. There are elements that can be improvised (random encounters and so on) but the physical locations...

D&D General No Fixed Location -- dynamically rearranging items, monsters, and other game elements in the interests of storytelling

I asked for an example of why I would change the location of a treasure room in the middle of a session. Fair enough. I wouldn't worry about it. Thanks. I apologize if I felt things were getting antagonistic. Maybe I was getting a little defensive and for that I apologize. Maybe my own thing...

D&D General No Fixed Location -- dynamically rearranging items, monsters, and other game elements in the interests of storytelling

Yeah this is getting antagonistic. Because it is bad form to change the nature of the game on your players? That the expectation as a DM is to provide accurate and impartial information. That once I start just moving things around in the game world to suit my needs, I betray that expectation...

D&D General No Fixed Location -- dynamically rearranging items, monsters, and other game elements in the interests of storytelling

Yes and the example makes no sense. The example assumes that I would have to change the game in the middle of the session. I don't even understand why I would ever do such a thing. If you are playing Settlers of Catan, you don't change the tiles or the numbers in the middle of the game. In...

D&D General No Fixed Location -- dynamically rearranging items, monsters, and other game elements in the interests of storytelling

yeah you are missing the point. Firstly during design I can put treasure wherever I want. You are forgetting that I 'as DM' am stocking my dungeons as I see fit during the design. If I put the helm of water lords in the toliet and the players find it there then so be it. Why would I move it to...

D&D General No Fixed Location -- dynamically rearranging items, monsters, and other game elements in the interests of storytelling

I don't know how to respond. I asked for clarification of your example and haven't received any clear clarification Based on the nature of the example I can only answer with that changing the location of a treasure room in the middle of an adventure is changing the environment on the players...

D&D General No Fixed Location -- dynamically rearranging items, monsters, and other game elements in the interests of storytelling

Maybe because I still don't understand the point of your example. I don't understand what reason or motivation I would have to secretly move the location of a room or treasure room in the middle of an active session. That's literally altering game reality on my players in the middle of a game.

D&D General No Fixed Location -- dynamically rearranging items, monsters, and other game elements in the interests of storytelling

In this case I would not change the location of the treasure room during the session. If after the session, they did not find the place and no information was gained about it, I would revisit.

D&D General No Fixed Location -- dynamically rearranging items, monsters, and other game elements in the interests of storytelling

I don't understand the use case. Would you provide a reason or an example why one would change the location of a treasure room in the middle of the session?

The D&D Edition Complexity Thread- How do you order Edition Complexity?

OD&D with the supplements is nearly as complex and detailed as AD&D. Also OD&D, by the books, suffer from poor editing and external dependencies that aren't intuitive. I think you even need Chainmail to play it properly. My ranking closely matches lowkey13's, although I never played Holmes or 2e.

    D&D 5E (2014) Am I no longer WoTC's target audience?

Lol funny. Good thing those two concepts mentioned are not mutually exclusive.

    D&D 5E (2014) Am I no longer WoTC's target audience?

Using grapple rules to compare complexity in different editions isn't exactly a fair comparison. The only point I’ll grant you is descending AC. B/X is dramatically simpler than 5E. Compare the action economy, resource management, and number of choices needed to create a character.

    D&D 5E (2014) Am I no longer WoTC's target audience?

Funny, I believe the exact opposite. My personal opinion is that WoTC screwed the pooch with 3rd edition and they've been trying to fix the issues they interjected into the game ever since. 5E is their next attempt to get the game closer to in line with how good it was in the past. Although...

D&D General No Fixed Location -- dynamically rearranging items, monsters, and other game elements in the interests of storytelling

They will appreciate it when they decide to check those areas and discover something interesting. If there is a statue that has a secret compartment to a treasure room and they ignore it for months. If one day they decide to check the statue out and find the treasure, they would have found the...

D&D General No Fixed Location -- dynamically rearranging items, monsters, and other game elements in the interests of storytelling

That's not always true. In my megadungeon campaign, there are tons of secret sub-levels, treasure rooms, teleporters, hidden stairs that have simply never been found. They exist independently of the players. They have not been found simple because the players have chosen not to explore in that...

D&D General No Fixed Location -- dynamically rearranging items, monsters, and other game elements in the interests of storytelling

#1 the GM is throwing an encounter at the players. #2 the GM is presenting a choice of actions for the players to take. If these choices end up with the same encounter anyway, then it isn't really a choice.
