What makes a successful superhero game?

The two best ways to get those choices are infinite character creation rules or freeform character creation. I don't think it's possible to balance superheroes mechanically. Unless your mechanics are purely about story rather than physics. There's just no way to make Green Arrow equally...

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

That's the first time I've ever seen that argument. The point of balance is not to balance. That's almost some Zen koan @#$% right there.

What makes a successful superhero game?

To me that's one of the big arguments against point buy systems. It's not possible to mechanically balance Superman and Batman. It's a fool's errand to try. If someone has rank 1 fish telepathy it should be on their sheet regardless of the efficiency of a point buy system.

What makes a successful superhero game?

Yeah, those are hard to design but they are out there. Games like MHR and most of the story-focused games. The much easier approach is to have challenges and obstacles that cater to the specific powers and abilities of the actual characters in the group, like how comic writers do and have done...

What makes a successful superhero game?

This is a riff on a similar thread about horror. With Fantastic Four and Superman in theaters, the DC Heroes reprint Kickstarter getting closer and closer to fulfilling, and M&M playtesting 4E…I’m feeling a bit nostalgic and in the mood for superheroes. By “successful” here I mean that it works...

    Simpler alternatives to run Shadowrun?

There are a few things in Daggerheart already that make me think you could do it with a campaign frame. You'd need to homebrew a bit of stuff, but most of what you'd need is there. Shadowrun Anarchy can be great with the right group. I'd suggest reading it over at least. But if you have players...

A lot of those serve amazing food. The Foster pic, the Cuban place just in the shot on the right serves great food. A newer food cart pod opened on 82nd. Core. They have a good selection of Mexican, including a Don Bigote, which does up-scale churros.

In M&M3E you need to do extra effort to perform a power stunt, which gives you fatigue then exhausted. You can avoid the fatigue by spending a hero point. It's one of the long list of reasons I still prefer Marvel Super Heroes. In MSH you could stunt all the time as long as you made the roll...

    Daggerheart General Thread [+]

Yeah, you can easily read it that way. And it's an incredibly dynamic system. Especially with the pages of suggestions on reskinning and reflavoring things. For example, up thread I suggested an eladrin by mixing the elf sleep feature with the faun leaping feature. Just reskin the leaping as...

US Tariffs: $80-$200 Surcharge On All Packages Regardless of Price

Yes they can, but they won't. For anyone interested here's an overview of the legalities about this. It's a readable overview, not dry legalese. https://www.usconstitution.net/executive-tariff-authority/

Yeah. It's like a best worst list. Good for the place at the top, but they're still at the bottom.

Exactly. It’s wildly over complicated for too little payoff. The juice isn’t worth the squeeze. The kind of lifepath character creation where you just pick options was great. As was random char gen. Anything to avoid all that pointless math and wasted time. Again, exactly. Having to recalculate...

Brennan Lee Mulligan to GM Critical Role Campaign 4

Just about any superhero system will do a far better job of power fantasy than any fantasy-themed game. If people really want power fantasy, they should look there. They absolutely blow away anything you see in D&D, Daggerheart, Exalted, etc.

Nah. That's just moving from line one to line two. I used to love it, now I hate it.

The nerd sphere is two lines. You don't love the thing I love as much as I love it, therefore you suck. You don't hate the thing I hate as much as I hate it, therefore you suck.

What are you reading in 2025?

With the impending completion of the DC Heroes RPG Kickstarter I’m digging through my old books. I remember a few complaints about the system, but the edge has faded. It’s a fantastic system that still holds up. Can’t wait to see what the shiny new box looks like.

    Starting Daggerheart campaign. Any pitfalls?

Exactly. It's like Fate aspects, there might be a better and worse way to phrase them, but they still have to apply and the player still has to spend hope to use it. I can see how it might be a problem for some, but I think it's essentially self-correcting.

Huh. I'm glad I missed that. To me that's a sure sign it's already way too complex. Absolutely. It's really wild with the AP chart that measures things in ranks. As stock PL10 character can easily have flight 10, which is barely subsonic, and flight 11 breaks the sound barrier. And these are...
