OSR What's more important for a retroclone?

To me, a retroclone is defined by copying the rules of an older game as closely as possible. Like Old-School Essentials. There are plenty of great games out there that copy the feel of the old-school games, but they're not retroclones. Like Shadowdark.

Childhood education, say in the K-1 range, in a society that's not zero-sum would more than handle that.

    Star Trek United

Given his politics are diametrically opposed to the heart and soul of Star Trek, it's more than fair to say he hates Star Trek.

Wouldn't be hard. Just don't raise them in a system that only ever rewards selfishness. Selfishness is not human nature, it's culture. You can tell by looking outside capitalist cultures.

Seems odd you're asking me to violate your own anti-politics rules, but okay. He's someone who would be almost instantly banned for violating the inclusivity rules. Here's an article. https://accountable.us/right-wing-billionaire-larry-ellison-set-to-control-cbs-news/

It's why I'm beyond skeptical of the new owners of Paramount. They seem to have the...opposite view...from the baseline pro-science, pro-diversity, etc that Star Trek has espoused since its inception.

We don't have a resource problem. We have a distribution problem. A recent study shows that “Provisioning decent living standards (DLS) for 8.5 billion people would require only 30% of current global resource and energy use, leaving a substantial surplus for additional consumption, public...

D&D General GMing and "Player Skill"

We must be time travelers then as we’ve played D&D in almost exactly that style since at least 1984. The group of older kids I played with had been playing that way for years prior to me joining. Yep. That’s why they were almost never run at all or changed thoroughly before being run.

Daggerheart "Description on Demand" a GM DON'T

That's one insight I think is spot on. The fail state of a Daggerheart game is D&D 5E. Even if you ignore all the narrative-focused stuff, you've still got a pretty good superheroic fantasy action-adventure game.

Daggerheart "Description on Demand" a GM DON'T

As always, talk to your players. Find out if they're into something like this. A great way to split the difference is have the players come up with a list of things they want to inject into the game. If they're the involved-backstory or goal-oriented types, then this should be real easy. A...

Going back a little bit. I am curious what specific game(s) you're talking about here. What game(s) are you running in this style?

D&D General GMing and "Player Skill"

I 100% agree with most of what you're saying in this thread about this style of play. The bolded above is the part I'll disagree with slightly. This isn't thinking about the environment as a real space, this is thinking about the environment as a gaming space. Telegraphing traps is...

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

It can't happen fast enough for me. Yeah. Even if designers would start with, "This is a problem. Is there a solution outside of tabletop RPGs?" would be a massive step forward.

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

That's exactly the problem I'm having, yes. Thank you for proving my point. I think having dedicated discussions about cars and trucks would be productive, but for some reason there's always someone who feels compelled to chime in with "But that excludes the El Camino!" It's crab mentality...

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

A whole lot of video games do that particular thing quite well. There's so much our hobby could learn from video games. It'll always be wild to me that is apparently a purely one-way street. Video games freely borrowed from RPGs in the early days...and yet there's some kind of ingrained refusal...

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

Right. There's that split as well. I was talking about other divides in the hobby like crunch level, new school vs old school, beer & pretzels vs serious business, thespians vs gamers, etc.

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

The trouble is the community (mostly online, large parts of most of them, and many separate communities) are just so overwhelmingly toxic. With clearly no desire by many of the members to change this at all. Better to solo play, play video games, or play pretend with dolls than engage with the...
