    D&D 5E (2014) Surf's D&D 5e Monster Analysis

Ahhh... The monsters! That's the meat that's missing for me to say how I think 5e is going to turn out. Trying to analyze the game with only one side of the equation is really hard. I talked to a couple of my players, and they aren't that fond of what they have seen of 5e yet. I can actually...

    D&D 5E (2014) Critical Hits

You can only search for headings. Everything that's in body text is unsearchable. You can't copy-paste it either, which is probably why it's done like that. I think it's pretty lame.

Two encounters at once: what would you do?

Sounds like good advice to me. When you are looking at a TPK and your players are trying to be creative to get out of it, try to say yes to smart ideas. To me, that's one of the big differences between a computer rpg and a pen-and-paper rpg. Sure it's a bit far-fetched, but you could just as...

Player vs Plot - DM responsibilities

I like campaigns as cooperate storytelling. I prefer talking with my players about what sort of characters I think would fit, have them bounce ideas off me and then create the characters. Alternatively, the players could discuss what type of characters they want to play, and then I as a DM can...

    D&D 5E (2014) Legen Lore 7/14/2014

It really feels like WotC is stuffing the three first 5e books as full of stuff as they can. Looking at the 5e PHB, it's supposed to have 12 classes. That's up from 8 for 4e or 8 from AD&D 2e. I really like that they are actually taking care to make the books interesting reads. With 4e, they...

D&D 5E (2014) Rules Discussion: Somatic Components and Restrained

Silence has some alternate uses as well. For instance to make an assasination silent, to make it easier for the plate armor wearing character to sneak (let's say with guards on the other side of a curtain), to make it possible to hammer away at a door without waking the whole dungeon. You could...

D&D 5E (2014) First Adventure is critical to Adoption of rules for my group

I have had the same experience, if the first adventure highlights how the game system is supposed to work it makes it much easier to get into it

D&D 5E (2014) Rules Discussion: Somatic Components and Restrained

I would allow the spell, but give ad/dis on save or attack. He can move a little. You could argue that he is more stuck than usual since he fell into it and not allow it this time.

    D&D 5E (2014) Handling Initiative

I roll individual initiativ for most monsters and the players roll for each character. Asking who goes when etc would actually slow combat down. Instead I use some cardboard triangles with the PC name/Monster number written on them and sort them according to initiative. I also use a marker (a...

D&D 5E (2014) We Played 5th Edition for the First Time Last Night

How old is that pdf? The monsters have level instead of Challenge, so I suspect it's before they redid the monsters. From the pdf a Bear Tribe Shaman is level 3 and gives 120xp and has 22 hp. From the MM spoiler, we have the Hobgoblin which is CR 1/2, gives 100 xp and has 11hp.

    D&D 5E (2014) 5e Hobgoblin stat block

ThirdWizard thanks for running the test. Not too surprising result. The hobgobling tactics were smart, and the PC's a bit shabbier, the spell selection was maybe a bit off. Something like Burning Hands which does damage to multiple targets might have done better. Anyway, I think it's pretty...

    D&D 5E (2014) Math v Character

It was 4e, so -2 is quite noticeable. Anyway the player wasn't complaining. I am the DM and thought it would be a cool bonus to get brutal on all the damage dice, not just the weapon damage dice. The effect is that he misses a bit more, but when he hits, he hits harder. Very much in touch with...

    D&D 5E (2014) Math v Character

And often, you can just talk to the DM if there is something in the system that makes your character concept not work. I have done lots of small house rulings for specific characters to make them more mechanically viable instead of hunting through 20 splat books to find the perfect...

D&D 5E (2014) First Basic Game: Fun With Backgrounds (And Not Much Else)

Yeah, I agree. You're welcome! :) The cleric archer is also perfect as a party/self buffer, since he keeps back and won't be attacked/hit/interrupted as much as a front-line cleric. He will also have the spell slots to do actual buffing (since he won't use them to attack with), and benefits...

    D&D 5E (2014) Math v Character

The math here agrees with your choice though. The breastplate has a max dex of +2, so by the time you can afford it, you probably have a dex of 18, which makes them equal. At 20 dex, studded leather is superior. The example is an example of good design, where math and character go hand in hand...

D&D 5E (2014) First Basic Game: Fun With Backgrounds (And Not Much Else)

Ahh... That explains it, even if it doesn't make much sense. ;) As a player I would have asked for a Longbow, and as a DM, I would have given the PC one.

D&D 5E (2014) First Basic Game: Fun With Backgrounds (And Not Much Else)

For the cleric mentioned, the crossbow does 1d8+3 damage vs 1d8 for Sacred flame, so against relatively low AC targets, the extra damage is probably more important. The average damage is 7.5 vs 4.5, or 66% higher. The apply-damage chance would have to be 66% better for Sacred flame for it to do...

D&D 5E (2014) So Is The Dex Based Fighter Just Strictly Better?

I agree, it didn't solve anything, it's why i said "solved". ;) I do think exchanging STR for DEX as the best stat in 5e doesn't solve anything either. Although, the weapon selection you get with finesse-weapons is pretty limited. You either get the Rapier ... or... the Rapier. Not too...

D&D 5E (2014) Out of Combat Utility Analysis

I agree with your argument, but not with your analogies that you compare D&D to (my assumption, maybe wrong?). I would say that D&D is a team game like basket, where the different players (for basket) or characters (for D&D) are unequal. They all work together to make the best team though. That...
