Demons, Devils and Celestials! Oh My!

Yeah, I started playing in 1986 with the Red Box, and graduated to 2E. I've never been able to stand 1E, which is -- IMO -- a really ugly looking confusing mess of a game. Sure, sure. Not claiming otherwise. I'm just saying that because I missed 1E, I found the sudden abundance of demons...

Demons, Devils and Celestials! Oh My!

Forked from: 4E reminded me how much I like 3E I never made this connection before reading CleverNickName's post, but this is something that really bugged me about 3E and will almost certainly bug me about 4E: demons. Everywhere! I started playing BECMI, which has no demons. Or devils...

    D&D 3.x 4E reminded me how much I like 3E

In the six years I've been D&D 3.5, I have never seen any of my players take more than 2 regular classes and one prestige class. Yet, they are regularly able to defeat level appropriate challenges. Your claim, methinks, is specious.

    Driders are opposite now: Discuss

First of all, I like this change overall. That said, there is a long history of the Gods cursing people with superpowers. An example would be vampirism: Cursed by God to be immortal, super-strong, nearly unkillable, and able to shapeshift. Some curse! Some Greek legends attribute the...

    Skill System?

Yeah, kind of hard for 5 ranks of Tumble to give a +2 to Leap when they're the same skill.

Pathfinder 1E What is Pathfinder doing about multi-classing?

I did, I'm pretty active over there, but I think it got lost in all the many good ideas that people have been throwing up all over the place there. I pity Jason, having to try to organize and absorb all the feedback paizo has been getting. Still, I'm glad they're doing it, because an open...

Pathfinder 1E What is Pathfinder doing about multi-classing?

The party is about fifth level right now. I should mention that I altered the way Weapon Training works, so now it provides +1/+1d6 instead of +1/+1. So at 20th level, the fighter will add +4d6 to every attack with their favored weapon group. I found this doesn't unbalance the game at all...

Bag of tricks bag of trick bag of tricks yesss.

Wow. You know what? I'm sorry I offered my opinion. Watching some of you fall over yourself to defend it is just sad. Like Gimmel, you're right, you can emphasize just the "can." And you're even right that you can use the bag of tricks for something other than combat. But you have...

Maybe? I don't know. I didn't notice anything about that. Though you've just hit on another thing about 4E I don't like: "per encounter powers." In my 3.5 campaigns, the introduction of encounter-based powers -- most notably the Inspiration Points of the Factotum -- have lead to so many...

Pathfinder 1E What is Pathfinder doing about multi-classing?

This is the thing I love most about Pathfinder. The straight fighter played by the non-optimizer in my playtest game is holding his own with a wizard/fighter/eldritch knight and a rogue/hexblade the two optimizers are playing.

I really don't see how you can claim that making absolutely no mention of non-combat uses and listing only one possible use (combat) for the item "practically screams" that this item is to be used in such a way. Nothing in that write-up implies that there are other uses for the item than...

Bag of tricks bag of trick bag of tricks yesss.

Not to start an edition war, but this new version of the bag of tricks (gray) really captures exactly why 4E leaves me cold in my tracks. Looking at the creatures that pop out of the gray bag of tricks, I notice they all have some amount of combat usefulness. It seems that this new bag of...

What Classes Existed in Earlier Editions?

Dragon #109 featured an article on creating new classes for D&D that introduced the Orc, Generic Adventurer, Viking, Fairy and Ubermensch. I used the Generic Adventurer (as the Adventurer), the Viking and the Fairy in my own campaign, and used the Orc class to generate Orcs with levels. I also...

    1st level DnD adventures

Which system? Goodman Games released a great book, still available as a pdf from paizo, called "The Adventure Begins" that has 20 very nice first level adventures for 3.5. If you're looking for 4E, you're pretty much SOL at this point.

Pathfinder 1E Pathfinder RPG Beta Preview 4

I just like that the core book is apparently going to have some breadth to its feat selection. I saw extra lay on hands for paladins, greater spell focus, and other things that suggest that classes other than fighter will have some actual choices.

Pathfinder 1E Pathfinder: Encounter Design Simplified

That's what players are for! No, but seriously, I've been thinking about this. Look at the Hazards in Tome of Horror. These are non-creatures/terrain features with CRs. Most of them are basically "Anything within 30' must Save or be affected by effect." CR 1/4 - DC 15 Save, 1d6 damage...

    Dumb Question About OGL Monsters

See though, that's the thing. I don't want to adopt it as my own creation. I just want to use it as open game content. If I have to change it, how is it exactly that I'm using the open game content? Why do I have to add my own content (renaming it for example) to use it? That just seems...

    Dumb Question About OGL Monsters

Okay, so even after all these years, I'm still a bit confused by how the OGL works exactly. Here's the thing I'm unclear about: I have the Monsternomicon from Privateer Press. The Monsternomicon features a creature I really like called Cephalyx. They're clearly a substitute for the not-OGL Mind...

Pathfinder 1E Pathfinder: Encounter Design Simplified

This is an amazingly useful tool Wulf, thanks for it. I'm writing an adventure for Pathfinder Alpha/Beta, and this is a lot easier on my brain than other methods presented. The only thing that would make this perfect is if it could account for terrain and environment modifications, which it...

The return of the lead mini

Does this mean I have to stop eating my miniatures!?! No, but more seriously, this is actually bad news for hardcore mini fans. While this will leader to cheaper miniatures, the softer lead simply doesn't hold detail the way the tin-zinc alloys do, so this means lower-quality metal miniatures...
