So how many of you made the switch?

I've been using a method for a long time that I'm really fond of, it knocks the sharp corner off the lower end of the bell-curve really well. Roll two dice for hit dice, your class die and the next "step" down - i.e., a fighter leveling from 1st to 2nd rolls a d10 and a d8 - and take the...

So how many of you made the switch?

I never "switched," per se (I had just gotten back into role-playing less than a year before they dropped 3.5, and I had already blown $60 on 3.0 core rules), but I've been gradually house-ruling in changes the whole time. There's plenty of changes that I like, and there's a few that I thought...

    loss of limb

And fourth it - also, see HERE for an example of play using that system. I love it. As a side note, I heard that Unearthed Arcana (3e, of course) has a perks and disadvantages system that includes stuff like "missing limb." Can anybody confirm this, and is it any good? I've got a player...

    0-level spells?

Oh, sure, 0th lvl spells are great. Let's see... Detect and read magic: No explanation necessary. Cure minor wounds: Instant combat medic. Ray of frost and/or acid splash: Ready for spellcasting disruption. Mage hand: Come on. It's freakin' telekinesis! Could you get more useful-er...

Thought Exercise: Give Bard Full BAB

Or - and, maybe I'm just whistling in the dark, here - TAKE A FIGHTER LEVEL. Or two. If you want a bard that fights better, you give up some of the bard's strengths - again, skills and magic - in exchange for HP and BAB, maybe a feat or two. There's a reason the two "spellcasting fighter"...

Providence, Rhode Island Gameday -- Nov 11

I'd love to play some boring ol' D&D in the morning. Any chance of that happening? ;)

Thought Exercise: Give Bard Full BAB

I don't know that giving the bard a fighter BAB progression would make them over-powered, as it doesn't really play into their strengths: skills and magic. But does it really need to be done? They're hardly under-powered, but what they are (and are meant to be) is an all-around support...

That's just the download price for the PDF preview. Wait until the ultra-uber leather-bound edition with gold leaf illuminations comes out. ;)

Providence, Rhode Island Gameday -- Nov 11

Woonsocket's about 15 minutes north of Prov, and I believe there's a Marriot or something in town. I can provide rides, too, if anyone's in the area and doesn't mind packing into a minivan.

Nasty Criticals and You: When getting hurt REALLY hurts.

It's nice, too, because it rarely comes up - criticals are relatively rare, critical effects moreso. This is the first time I've referred to the book twice during a session. Obviously it'll come up more as the fighters start getting higher to-hit, and keen weapons, and so on, but everything...

Nasty Criticals and You: When getting hurt REALLY hurts.

They are. And, to be sure, it does step up mortality in combat, on both sides. As we all know, this impacts the PCs much more than it does any individual mook. But I don't mind having combat be something with (occasionally) grisly consequences, besides just death - it makes negotiation a...

Do You Kill off your PC's.

I had something to add from last night's game, but it turned into a whole story - check HERE if you're interested.

Nasty Criticals and You: When getting hurt REALLY hurts.

Well, folks, I don't know what ruleset you're using (actually I probably do) but we play 3.0. In the 3.0 MM (and the matching SRD), an ogre is CR2. Of course, from the story I just related, I think it's pretty obvious why they'd be bumped to a CR3 (at least) in 3.5, but in the statistical...

Nasty Criticals and You: When getting hurt REALLY hurts.

Heh. Here's a short little vignette that didn't quite fit in this thread. I've been somewhat of a softy DM in the past; it's hard for me to resist the temptation to fudge that big damage roll to save a PC's bacon - especially if it's a case where I misjudged the danger (CR not being an exact...

    roleplaying people are satanists ;)

That's why I advertise the fact that I listen to a lot of Black Metal. Carrying around a PHB just doesn't do the trick, anymore. ;)

[EDITION WARZ] Selling Out D&D's Soul?

I'll tell ya one thing, though - some of my players get to play (whether as DMs or players) a lot more than I do. If I'm a little fuzzy on the grapple rules, or how many rounds sleep lasts, I call down the table for an assist. Which disrupts the flow of the game 0.00000004 times as much as...

[EDITION WARZ] Selling Out D&D's Soul?

Dumps fall, everyone dies! Not for nothing, but I was using "cleave" (or a rule that would pass on a quick glance) since about 1992. It always struck me as a relatively intuitive way of illustrating how to make a character with the new rules. One of the best aids to a DM making the switch...

[EDITION WARZ] Selling Out D&D's Soul?

(I'm just replying as I read, here, so this may have already been said, but:) I really do not find this to be the case. I've grafted several sub-sets of rules onto my 3.0 game, some from third-party publishers, some from online sources, and some out of my brain, and it's done nothing but...
