Dead in your first combat ever?

Well, here's my take: There's no better time to learn an (admittedly somewhat Darwinian) lesson about caution, tactics, and just plain dumb luck - all of which play a part in character lifespan in D&D - than at first level. Better early in the game then once they've hacked their way up to...

    roleplaying people are satanists ;)

They need a "Choose your own Adventure" tract for you.

Hahaha... That's cool, AOK, I can probably even resist the temptation to name him Colonel Angus. ;) I'll brush up on my best Foghorn Leghorn voice.

I guess that leaves the Yankee Gambler and the Confederate Soldier for the Meaty Zombie pregens, huh? Hmmm... I'm not sure I could properly portray a Confederate soldier, so it might fall to me to be the Yankee gambler - unless I could just play Alferd Packer? ;) Just picture this...

Some questions on the Hide skill (world's dumbest rule question?)

I'm just talking about across multiple rounds: Hide (round 1, presumably before you're seen), SA (round 2), then go hide somewhere else that round or the next. And I'm not talking about hiding behind a coatrack or something, I mean hiding with complete concealment and/or cover. If you get...

Wizard/Cleric of Wee Jas: An Open Invitation for Advice and Criticism

Hmm, I may have to do that. It's probably a go; we're all pretty easy-going about allowing in third-party resources - we're as anti-power gaming a group as you could find, so no-one's really trying to break the game - so something that's right in the SRD (3.5 or no) is practically a given.

Some questions on the Hide skill (world's dumbest rule question?)

Ok, so you were talking about a full-round action. I guess what I'm getting at is that, once you've hidden in a previous round, that's it - you're hidden. Unless you go somewhere, you don't need to make another action or check, so you would simply a) attack (breaking cover, obviously), and b)...

Some questions on the Hide skill (world's dumbest rule question?)

I'm not sure how it is in 3.5 (ok, actually I am, I just checked the SRD), but in 3.0 there isn't a defined "hiding while attacking" action, you would simply move half your speed while hiding (full speed if you don't mind a -5 penalty) as a move-equivalent, and attack as a standard. I guess I'm...

Wizard/Cleric of Wee Jas: An Open Invitation for Advice and Criticism

Ooohhh... That looks tasty - almost too good to be true, as a matter of fact. You wouldn't happen to know if that appears in any 3.0 sources, would you? It's definitely right along with my character concept.

Some questions on the Hide skill (world's dumbest rule question?)

I have defintely treated this as a house rule situation - i.e., it doesn't explicitly state anywhere in the 3.0 Core Rules that the Hide skill can be used to Sneak Attack, but it's just common sense. As for which situations it can be used in, I tend to wing it. If the rogue can pull off a...

Wizard/Cleric of Wee Jas: An Open Invitation for Advice and Criticism

Well, we're all still alive. ;) Of course, we've only been through a total of three monster encounters, all with single baddies that were too busy trying to eat the paladin to worry about little ol' me, but we survived a potential TPK trap to boot. The monsters were a manticore, an ettin, and...

Wizard/Cleric of Wee Jas: An Open Invitation for Advice and Criticism

It'll definitely be an interesting challenge; I usually play CG/NG woodsy types (druids and rangers). Noted, good idea for after we're back in town. Actually... oops. I actually copied the "scratch" sheet (from a rather hurried character creation), cross off the web scroll, and tack on a...

Wizard/Cleric of Wee Jas: An Open Invitation for Advice and Criticism

Ah, that's the other thing - we still play with 3.0 rules, so according to the Phb we're using, she only has access to Death, Law, and Magic. I'm sure my DM would allow it if I asked, but we've already started playing - and, besides, Law and Magic fit my character. Interesting to note, though...

Wizard/Cleric of Wee Jas: An Open Invitation for Advice and Criticism

I should probably mention the party makeup: Other than myself (LG mage/cleric of Wee Jas), we have a LG human paladin of Pelor, a LN (or LG, I'm not 100% sure) human monk, and a CG halfling fighter/rogue. (Somebody's always gotta be different, huh? It actually works pretty well, he's...

Wizard/Cleric of Wee Jas: An Open Invitation for Advice and Criticism

So, I'm the "default DM," the guy who never gets to play - until now. One of the guys just kicked off a city-based "intrigues and double-dealing spiced with dungeon crawls" campaign last week, and I'm all a-flutter with the chance to actually run a PC. The PCs have been recruited from...

Well, sign me up for Ao's All Flesh game in the afternoon. I'm still on the fence as to whether I want to run something in the am, but I never turn down the opportunity to re-kill some zombies.

Skills That Should be Handy for an Adventurer...But Aren't in Actual Play.

Well, in the setting, it's pretty much a license to congregate in groups of four or more with weapons, or to go about with weapons that aren't peace-bonded. It pretty much equates to a carry permit. It's enforceable by imprisonment or exile, but (as the nation's badly in need of adventurers...
